"Nissan Canada Inc. (NCI) released its sales figures for January, 2007 today, which were the best January results in its history. The total sales figure for both Nissan and Infiniti brands was 5,189 units, an increase of 1358 units (35.4%) over January 2006.

Sales were again led by the Nissan Altima this month with 1,114 units, its best January result ever and an increase of 408 units (34%) over January2006.

The Big Nissan Losers were in the Gas Guzzler catagory..Xterra, Pathfinder, Murano, Armada and Titan...

The Versa remained strong with 1,073 units sold this month. Versa hasnow sold 7,800 units in 7 months." ......................................................................................................................

Now I imagine that California alone probably sells more Versas than 7,800 in a single month, but up here in the Great White North, 1073 new Versas a month is a pretty big deal, and notice that the Versa is selling at almost a one to one tie with the ALtima, their best seller!

Nissan, would probably sell more Versas if they followed Toyota Canadas announcement today that due to the CDN dollar being on or close to par with the U.S. dollar, they were cutting MSRP's 5 to 8%.

Toyotas are still a lot cheaper in the U.S. even after this little MSRP adjustment, but it's a wake up call to the rest of the auto industry Bean Counters to wake up and smell the coffee.

If Toyota made the move, I would expect the rest of the Japanese manufacturers to follow pretty close suit.

and the Versa still seems to be a bigger hit than Nissan ever dreamed. 1st year sales figures ended up almost being double what their initial production quota was intended to be (79,000+ actual sales, I think their goal was stated at like 40 or 50k...)

This means many good things. Nissan will stress production and sales of the Versa more, they will probably pay more attention to the line... more sales generally means more aftermarket demand... and for those of you who keep their cars more than a few years, TONS of junkyard parts will end up being available, since it will be a common car.

Nissan $ales Looks great

Huh? Nissan's total units sold in North America for January 2008 were down 7.3% compared to the same period of the previous year. Percentage-wise, it was the biggest drop among the big J-threesome of Toyota (-2.3%), Honda (coincidentally also -2.3%) and N.

Nissan Canada's numbers are too small to be meaningful. The total unit count for the whole NA for Nissan was 76,605.

Too bad about the American Nissan Numbers, but the Altima and Versa are big sellers here in Canada...

here is the news release from yesterday, Friday Feb 1 2008

Nissan Canada Inc. January Sales Results - NCI shatters January Records -

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - Nissan Canada Inc. (NCI) released itssales figures for January, 2007 today, which were the best January results inits history. The total sales figure for both Nissan and Infiniti brands was5,189 units, an increase of 1358 units (35.4%) over January 2006. This wasalso an incredible increase of 29% over its previous best January, in 2005.Nissan and Infiniti brands combined for an increase of 1.4% month over month. The Nissan brand accounted for 4740 units, an increase of 1306 unitsyear-over-year. It was also a 2% increase over December 2006 sales. TheInfiniti brand accounted for 449 units, which was the second best January inits history. Infiniti sold 68.2% more units than in January 2006.

As you pointed out, the Nissan Canada numbers are a drop in the North American market, bucket, but as EV mentioned, for the Versa, any increased sales of this new car, is ultimatly, all good news for us owners no matter what side of the 49th parallel we live on.

I understand the V volume, which is indeed a good thing. I just objected to your title of "Nissan $sales Looks great (emphasis mine)," which on the whole is not the case.

Nissan Canada's percentage increase looks deceptively impressive precisely because their volume is tiny, which we both know to be the case. It's like: Company A who used to sell 100 units now sells 150 for a 50% increase. That's an extreme illustration, but any increase gives a big percentage jump when the volume basis is small. It's ultimately the dollar amount (≈unit volume) that lets you eat, not the percentage increase in sales.

As a Canadian who bought a Versa in January, I'm not surprised. What I wanted was this;

2008 Versa SL Hatchback 6 spd, colour "blueberry" (that's dark blue).

Took a week to even find one in all of Ontario, and another week to get it shipped to Kingston from ThunderBay! It was the only Versa matching those criteria in the whole province, without waiting 6-8 weeks from the factory.

So indeed, these seem to be flying off the shelves.

Funny -- there are a raft of them here in Ottawa -- seemed like blueberry and hatch are the cars of choice.

Dealer stock is a little better here on the Prairies, but if you want an SL with CVT, you will still have to have one built, and wait for it. The few that are sitting for sale, are all 'S' models with no options. Not a good idea for sales in my mind. If an 'impulse' buyer wants a quick deal on a 'loaded' Vesa and drive away, that buyer would have better luck looking at other models. It probably all goes back to the small Canadian market.

When Nissan starts cranking out Versas built for Chrysler, Canadian supply might even get worse.

Keep in mind those Chrysler-badged Versas are to be sold in South America. I doubt they'd let that cut into the Canadian Versa supply, but who knows.
