I need help! I am trying to replace the exhaust from the manifold back on my 1985 Nissan 720 4x4 extended cab and I am stuck on how to remove the front pipe from the exhaust manifold. There isn’t much room between the manifold and the front pipe inner nut. Has anyone replaced the front pipe?
There is just enough room to get a socket on there, but what extension or tool to turn it off is another matter. HELP!!!

Joe

It sounds like you need a ratcheting wrench, or one of the ratchets that have the open head and open ended sockets. I have both of these and they help out a ton in these situations.

Just curious - Are you using a deep well socket, or a shallow one? If you're using a deep well, you might be able to switch to a shallow one and get a swivel extension, or a swivel socket that size. Go make a trip to Lowe's or your local auto parts store and you should be able to find something that will work.

Hopefully someone can chime in with more experience, but that's my suggestion for now.

Thanks for the response 4DSC. I have tried deep socket, medium deep socket, regular socket with swivel, and even a wobble extension. When I use the swivel, it loses the tight fit and seems to slip. I don't want to round off so I am pausing and will think more on this. There is a cross-member in the way underneath so the only real access is through the wheel well and that is tight quarters. I am leaning towards cutting the pipe and the new pipe and flanging them together.
If anyone else has any options I am all ears...

Welcome to NICO!!

From what I understand your trying to replace the exhaust from the manifold back. Correct?

If so I think you will likely have to cut it, The bolt is old and tired anyway if it were me I would cut it then buy all new bolts for your exhaust new that way next time you need to remove them it won't be a fight. :bigthumb:

If the front section of the exhaust is in good condition, I think I would go with flanging them together. Another option is to take your pieces to an exhaust shop and let them cut and weld it all in, which would be a more solid repair in the long run. I think flanging them together would be the next best though personally.

+1 on flange. Never hurts to simplify a design on the maintenance end.

You can't use a socket. The only way to remove that nut is with a crescent and patience!

What size crescent wrench is needed? I have the same truck and will be replacing the entire exhaust system when the parts arrive in the mail. Thanks!
