Apparently all the kids wrecking their 350Z's are skewing statistics...

Drivers of Nissan 350Z sports car and Titan pickup, as well as the humble Chevrolet Aveo run the most risk of dying in a crash, while Audi's luxury A6 cruised in relative safety, according to an insurance report Thursday.

Meanwhile sports utility vehicles (SUVs), formerly known as rollover death-traps, now have some of the best safety records in the industry, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Bigger is better when it comes to survival for drivers, institute said it found in a study of more than 150 vehicles.

The institute looked at driver death rates for 2005-2008 models during the calendar years 2006-2009.

The odds of a driver dying in a crash in all types of passenger vehicles have improved, but none so dramatically as with sport-utility vehicles, considered death-traps in the 1980s and 1990s because the top-heavy vehicles tended to roll over after sharp turns.

The institute said the SUVs were benefiting from the widespread adoption of electronic stability control, which helps prevent rollovers.

"With the propensity to roll over reduced, SUVs are on balance safer than cars because their bigger size and weight provide greater protection in a crash," the report said.

SUVs trail only minivans in low risk for drivers, the report said, listing the 26 riskiest and safest vehicles.

The Audi A6 shared the lowest driver death rate score -- zero -- with six other vehicles: the Mercedes E-Class luxury car, the Toyota Sienna minivan, and four SUVs -- the Ford Edge, the Nissan Armada, and two Land Rover models (Range Rover Sport and LR3).

For the deadliest, Nissan's 350Z was way ahead of the pack, with a driver death rate at 143 per million registered vehicle years, ahead of the Nissan Titan pickup truck at 126.

Two Chevrolet small-car models followed, the Aveo and the Cobalt at 119 and 117, respectively.

No s***. It's a cheap RWD sports car. Let's see how the Hyundai Genesis coupe compares in a few years. How much you wanna bet the stats look similar to the 350's?

I heard that report on the news yesterday. I am surprised by the results from the Titan Pickup. Given that the 350 is a 2DR sportscar I'm not too surprised by that.

Armada the best and 350z/Titan the worst. Covering all the bases!!!

Interesting, seeing as how the Armada and Titan are damn near the same thing. One is bought by testosterone laden dudes, and the other soccer moms?

...damn soccer moms crashing Titans :gapteeth:

I saw this on autoblog yesterday. They chalked it up to having no traction control. I thought they both did, but whatever. At least the Armada made the list for being one of the safest.

You already have the Mustang GT, S2000, RX8, Evo (yeah I know it's AWD, but it gets wrecked a lot and was the most expensive car on my list to insure when sports car shopping, meaning it's most likely going to cost the insurance company the most), and other cars of similar price and similar performance, but none of them are mentioned. I wonder what makes the 350z that much more dangerous than them?

F*ck, I drive both a 350z, and an Aveo on a regular basis! I'm sure the 240z I also drive isn't that safe either. I'm not surprised about the Aveo, it's a piece of sh*t that's falling apart and mine only has 12k miles on it.

Seriously, driver statistics are useless. Who do you think the demographic is gonna be for a 18k RWD sports car? It's still kids! So why would they be given the benefit of the doubt here?

Sheesh... BIG SUV's are safer now because there are alot less of them on the road because of fuel prices. Also I have notticed that the ones still on the road have sloooowed their butts down considerably to help the guzzling. The 350z and Titan though :wtf2:

If anything, small cars should be safer now with less SUVs on the road. These statistics are about RATE of injury/death/crash, meaning how often it happens per one million vehicles or whatever metric they use.

I doubt they teach lift-off oversteer in driver education these days.

I wish they did teach lift-off oversteer in drivers ed, because Nissan's sports car are the main ones that have oversteer the worse. I even catch myself preping before a turn in my vehicle at 45+ and god forbid I have to slow down in a curve.

If kids knew how to drive them, they wouldn't wreck them. Thank god for the years I drove and learned that prior to getting my license.

Eh, keep the kids off the road anyways. I don't think anyone should be getting a license till 18 years old, considering the legal age to work is that. They shouldn't be driving at all in my opinion under 18.

I don't know if I agree with that completely. First off, legal age to work is 16, not 18. In fact, it may even be 15 in some states. But GA is definitely 16, as well as MN. But regardless, I don't think it makes a difference between 16 or 18, what makes the difference is the education required to get your license. You could be 25 or 30 and it doesn't mean you are any better of a driver than a 16 year old.

The U.S. just needs to make the driving tests harder and require 1+ year of driver's ed before getting a license. Simple as that.

Work age was 14 in RI, 12 or 13 if it was a family owned business and you were working for your parents.

I THINK it works in Europe like this: drinking age 16, driving 18.Get the alcohol induced partying out of your system while you can't drive, then start the long laborious task of getting your license.

Yeah, it's actually 14 in Georgia, Sir Cheese. I started my first job at Winn Dixie when I was 14.

The 350Z and Audi A4 are neck and neck for the highest percentage of douchebag drivers. Not surprised.

But I do have a great deal of affection for the Z33.

Man that's a throwback, I can remember going to Winn Dixie as a kid, then the name change, then going out of business.

Yeah, I should have said it was at least 16, possibly younger. I didn't know you could work at 14 in GA, but I knew you definitely could at 16.

This is only going to get worse, Z33's are already going for as low as 8 grande.

Then there's the idiots that will probably do forced induction from the car lot, voila..an 11 thousand dollar 'supercar.' (That probably runs like death.)

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the next gen 240sx.

A research on collision safety that was just published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety states that the Study finds SUVs safer than smaller cars in auto accidents, makes it the most dependable cars on the road. The launch of electronic stability systems on SUVs has made the vehicles a lot safer, when they were once known for being too top-heavy and susceptible to rolling over like crazy. Its one among the seven vehicles with lesser death rate. The other six were the Land Rover Range Rover Sport and LR3, the Nissan Armada, the Audi A6 four-door 4WD, Mercedes E Class four-door 4WD and the Toyota Sienna. Nissan 350Z, along with the Nissan Titan crew cab, Chevrolet Aveo and Chevy Cobalt are said to have high death rates. Sounds alarming that SUVs now a good competitor of Nissan. It would be a challenge for the Nissan and other companies to produce a safer, high technology and eco-friendly car for the costumers.
