Moved to Tech.

You take the top plug out of the side of the transmission and feel for the fluid by sticking your finger in the hole. That's the fill hole. You want the fluid to be at the bottom edge of the hole on a flat and level surface.

As far as getting it into first and reverse, that's usually not where we see problems. Usually it's 2nd and 4th, and usually the cause is synchros.

Issues with getting the car into 1st and reverse are usually related to the clutch not fully disengaging when the pedal is pressed, adjust your clutch travel via the plunger to pedal connection, for instructions checkout the FSM.

For your sake I hope you do. it's not rocket surgery and usually pretty easy to tell if you have it adjusted properly.

Also, to be clear, the fill plug is on the passenger side of the transmission, not the top. If you don't know the history of it, its worth the money to drain it (via the bottom plug hole), and fill it with Redline MT-90.

Hey guys! I am also having a transmission problem. So I didn't think I would make a whole new post.I have a 94 N/A MT. I can accelerate fast in gears 1-3 just fine. When I try to go fast in 4th and 5th gear the transmission is acting like it is in neutral unless I let off the gas and rpms are at about 3000 then it catches again. Unsure what I need to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
