I'm not so much a Nissaholic, but more of a prodigal son....
Here's my story:
It all starts way back just after I was born, my dad had a brand new GMC Jimmy that spent more time in the shop than his driveway. He promptly got rid of the GMC for a Datsun 4x4 King cab (Brown/Light Brown, two-tone).
Fastforward 14 years or so (1997)...I learn to drive on my mom's VW Vanagon (4-spd manual). That learning experience is why I love VW to this day. The day my mom traded that van for a TDI Jetta wagon was a sad day for me, but as a student, couldn't buy it off her at the time. It had 370,000 km when she got rid of it.
Anyway, after learning to drive, I got my lisence, and as I was the last kid at home, I didn't have to share the 'kids' vehicle. Said vehicle happened to be that same Datsun 4WD that my dad bought brand new back in '82. I bombed all over town in that rust bucket. It had no working stereo, so I had a portable tape player plugged into the 12V outlet. That truck served me well while me and my buddies went skiing, mountain biking, exploring decomissioned forest roads, and occasional late night hooliganism.
Sadly, my immaturaty led that truck to an untimely death after crossing a river. I was out with some friends, and I stopped on the saturated sandbank instead of continuing onto the gravel, and the truck sank into the sand until it was resting on the body. The sun went down, the sand hardened, and we were able to dig the truck out and pull it out with one of the other trucks we had with us that day. The sand got into the bearings, brakes, and it just wasn't worth fixing. RIP Datsun at 313, 000 km.
Fastforward another few years (2003), my fiancee bought a brand new 2003 Cavalier, which got totalled by a dumptruck who ran a red light. We were planning on selling it anyway since we had got married and couldn't afford both the car and my tuition. To replace the Cavalier, we bought a '91 VW Golf. Same interior styling as my old Vanagon, same feel, and almost as awesome. Unfortuneatly, the car is not so reliable, so we decided to buy a second car to have something reliable, and have a car for my wife to drive while I use the VW to commute to my internship job that starts this May.
Enter the Nissan Versa. Not a Datsun, but close enough. I can't wait 'til it gets here. The stealership says it's in the province, but shouldn't take too long to get here.
And so, the prodigal son has returned to his roots, with both a VW and a Nissan in the driveway
