First of all, as TCO said, not really needed.

If you MUST have a cooler thermo, go to Advance Auto, etc. They were available in ~165°, ~180°, & ~195°.

The oem thermo is at 195 I dont like to run motor colder than what the factory intended.

These motors run extremly well at 195*F which is what I use. My normal temps are 184 on HOT days ant 178 on COLD days. Incase your wondering OP

I think normal 180°.

EDIT: Yea, FSM Page LC-9. Standard, 180°, Cold (areas) 190°, and Hot (areas) 170°.

Looks like my ****s balling then.

isnt it the opposite though? Cold areas 170 and hot areas 190? I dont how being in a hotter area yield cooler temps and vise versa.

You're thinking backwards.

If you're in a hotter climate, you want the engine to run cooler to prevent det.

If you're in a cooler climate, you want the engine to run hotter to keep the fuel atomized in the intake and ports.

I get that but how would the cooling system figure that?

The only way I can get my coolant temps down to 170 on hot days is manually switching my fans on.

What do you mean? The thermostat controls the temperature of the engine. It's closed which keeps the radiator out of the loop. This heats up the coolant in the block until it starts to reach the opening point of the thermostat. It then starts to circulate the hot coolant into the radiator. The cooled down coolant is circulated into the block and cools it's temperature down. This will continue until the radiator can't take the heat out faster than the engine is putting it in. Then the temps start to climb. At some point the fans come on and start cooling the radiator down, which cools the coolant off.

The thermostat is a 100% seal. So if you've got your fans on, the temp of the coolant drops way down and so very cold (ambient temp) coolant re-enters the engine. This can allow the temps to remain below the opening point of the the thermostat.

Generally you want to have the car set up so that the thermostat will control the temps under normal conditions and the fan isn't needed until you come to a stop or are idle for extended periods of time.

My fans NEVER come on during the summer unless I'm sitting in traffic. I've got them set up so that they come on when the engine temps get about 10-15° above the thermostat temp, and then turn back off at about 5-10° above the thermostats opening point.

I think Nissan intended your car to run at 195 degrees. Also Cars now days run at higher operating temperatures due to the very important fact that it allows the car to BETTER GAS MILEAGE. Now days alot of cars operate around 210.

Why would you want to make your turbo car operate at 180 is beyond me. Also Im not sure if CA's do but alot cars use the Water Temp sensor to turn the car to closed loop(as opposed to the O2 sensor). So you undercooled guys could be loosing like 5-6 mpg and are running rich for no reason.

Look in the FSM. It specifially states that the 180° thermo is the standard thermostat. You are supposed to run the 195° only if you live in a cold climate.

The fuel is staying atomized at any temperature above about 160°F, so I serious doubt the computer is still compensating for fuel and timing for any temp over that. It might pull timing if you get into a potential overheat condition to prevent detonation. That would be why they wouldn't want you to run the 195° thermo if don't live in a cold climate. If the car runs that hot, it could get much hotter than 195°F and risk detonation.

Do I have to put a copy of the page up here for you guys to believe me?

Now you make some sense. Thats why I was asking how the hell the coolant system does it. But now I see you meant by using different temp thermostats.

You were getting half the message but left out the important detail.
