So, I just got a call from someone with a very thick accent.

The cliffs of the call:

Caller: Congratulations, you have been selected as the prize winner of a new car. In the front seat will be a brief case with $20k in cash.

Me: What contest was this?

Caller: Morgan Stanley has a raffle. You pay your bills on time and were selected.

Me: I don't deal with Morgan Stanley.

Caller: Well, you have been selected a winner.

Me; Ok

Caller: All you have to do is pay the shipping and handling fee of $299

Me: Ok

Caller: Where is your nearest "wssertftrn"

Me: Huh?

Caller: Where is your nearest "wssertftrn"

Me: I don't think you are speaking english.

Caller: *very slowly* Where is your nearest Western Union?

Me: *click*

A minute later he calls back!

Caller: Why did you hang up?

Me: Because you asked me for a western union transfer, dumbass!!! I do not want anything, do not call back. *click*

Note: The whole time there was a delay of one to two seconds in his responses. And he consistently said, "Are you there?"

When asked where he was he said Tampa. The area code was correct. So they were going through a switch.

I would of been like:

"SWEET! Where is the prize located?"

"Ahh Tampa Bay"

"Wonderful, that is right around the corner. What is the address?"

LOL, I got a similar call awhile back from a phone number in Jamaica. The guy had a thick jamaican accent and claimed he was calling from Las Vegas. Same scam.

Sad thing is, with all the outsourced customers service and telemarketing, people are getting accustomed to hearing someone who is obviously from a foreign country claim to be located in the U.S. This scam will probably get people older people who are not tech-savvy.

This just happened to one of my friends except they posed as a girl on facebook needing money to pay a hotel bill she was staying at overseas. He ended up getting a call I believe and then kept calling back and messing with them lol.

What you should have said is the Western Union is very close and that you were on your way. Ask him for the name that he wanted you to send the $299 to, and then told him because he was a nice guy and you were so happy to win that you were going to send him an extra $1000 for himself ;).

The sad thing is many people still fall victim to these people :frown:.
