Hey everyone my knowledge about guns is very limited and I need a hand figuring out what gun this is. It belonged to my grandpaw and he passed away a while back so we don't know a whole lot about it.

What we do know is only the obvious,
Remington model 700 and it shoots a .243 win (which I assume "win" stands for Winchester)

What we would love to figure out,
Approximate worth.
Approximate year.
What "sub model" it is. (I searched Remington 700 and tons of rifles came up and none of them looked exactly like this one.)
and of course anything else you can tell us about the better.

If you need more pictures just ask I'll gladly post some more.

All my dad and I do is saltwater fish so our gun knowledge is very basic. We're not very familiar with the lingo either so bare with me please. :)

Thanks in advanced,
-Mark

Model: Remington 700 BDL
it can date back to 40 years old, but it could be slightly newer. Its worth about $400 if its cleaned up (give or take $50 depending on that scope)

do gramps a fave, and take care of that gun. if its in good operating condition, its a great rifle. upgrade the stock and keep it in the family!

The Rem 700 is an excellent rifle. It's in rough shape by the look. Clean up that corrosion asap because it will only get worse. Then oil it liberally if it's not going to be used, that way it doesn't corrode again.

And if you are going to use it I would investigate on how to inspect the bore and clean it properly to make sure there is nothing that will cause it to explode.

Thanks for the replies guys.

My dad had asked me if this was considered a deer rifle? Also yes, it is in rough shape we don't plan to fire it in its current shape although the internals appear to be stainless steel.

My grandpa also had these 2 guns, which are going to stay in the family. :)

As you may be able to tell from the pictures we already had them restored and are ready to be used, the smaller one has alot of sentimental value.

Quickstory: My grandpaw owned a couple package liquor stores and lounges during 1957-1977. Everyday come closing time when my grandpaw would shut the store down he would carry the smaller gun in a brown paper bag fully loaded and the days earnings in another bag, luckily he never had to use it in this instance.

The .243 is the smallest round I'd use when hunting dear. Shot placement is more critical. The .270 or .308 would be my go to rounds for deer hunting, but the .243 will work.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't hunt deer with that. I'd hunt the hell out of some coyote though!

And I love old school S&W's. I've got an all original matching numbers "Baby Russian" SA with the nubby trigger. Love that gun. Expensive to shoot though. .38S&W is hard to find nowadays.

Yeah, it's a good search engine. However, being as close to Alabama as I am, I'll just go pick up box of 50 .45 for $20...

I'm so thankful for the gun shops nearby.

Yeah, but no primers are being sold to the public, TMK. They're all going to manufacturers to keep up with the demand.

.243 is a fine round for medium game. A bit overkill on coyote unless it's a distance shot. That rifle is rough though, that condition, I don't think I'd give 200 for it. The pistols are rough too.

If you're worried about value, don't clean with anymore than 0000 brass wool that has a liberal soaking in rem oil.
