Anyone going to try for shots of the meteor shower tonight? I'm trying to figure out if it's going to be cloudy or not tonight. I'm giving it a 50/50 south of Boston.

I finally got my D5100 (That isn't broken) and I'm dying to try something with it. I'm goin gto pick up a tripod and with any luck a remote trigger on my way home from second shift tonight.

I read this and I'm sure it's underneath a few of you here, I was trying to get through the math they used. If I have the stock 18-55 lens, at 18mm, I should try an exposure of 33.3 secs? ( 600 / [focal length] ) So I'll just try a few 30s shots and see what happens. And this was at 100-400 iso?

^would love to attempt it, but the light pollution from Nashville kills any chance of good star pics around here

Where is the shower? Im in NJ and am actually going to set-up a shot in my basement w/turntables right now. Also just had a days worth of clouds and ran pass over, should be clearing.

EDIT: Just looked it up. Seems like after midnight is the best time, and since Im a night owl on the weekends Im going to give this a go. I actually saw a shooting star a few nights back (fiance didnt believe me, now I have NASA documentation) and I think I know where to aim the lens, if it all stays the same.

There's tons of people's house lights on, and friggin clouds. I set up the interval timer to snap every 35 seconds, and with the 30s exposure it just keeps chugging. I'll go in in a few minutes and see if they are coming out. I'll try this later if the clouds clear out a bit.

Stars are blurry, I'm going to try 15s exposure and up the iso. Lots of light pollution, a few OK pics though.

So that was a long night of experimentation. I found out the hard way that I just wasn't focused for most of the night. I'll have to figure out how to do that better. I couldn't catch any meteors, I swear all the bright ones were out of frame or the shutter wasn't open. These were my best efforts:

Hey guys,

I highly recommend Adorama.com for their used equipment sales. Also, KEH.com... They have saved me so much money in art school and the customer service is the best that I have dealt with. Especially Adorama! I had a product fail on me overseas and couldn't get it back to them until I got back 3 weeks later and I had my new one in 4 days.

Not really. I saw further back in the thread that someone had a problem with a refurbished Nikon body and the mirror falling off.

Now, here is a question for the more advanced. I was using a polarizing filter and I still got a crap ton of lens flare as you can see. I rotated that bastard til my fingers hurt and I couldnt get it to go away. Is it just unavoidable when shooting directly at the sun or any real bright light source like that? Or is my $20 filter a POS?

I find cheap filters don't really do much, the nicer glass ones do work. I shoot with a Circular Polarizer or ND filter a lot at the track to keep my shutter speed down. Took this a few months ago, quick light painting in my friends garage. Setup and shot took a couple minutes there is some weird noise but for a test shot it came out pretty well.

Anyone have experience with print? I recently bought more Living Social/Groupon deals than I should have for various High Res to Print packages (a couple canvas, a couple metal which I have done before but wasnt happy with). Any tips to getting quality print? These things are all for set sizes so Im assuming Im going to have to upload full size images (not cropped) and then set them into a template. How should I best frame my shots to get best quality and high pixel counts for the print? I have a Rebel T2i, what would be considered the basic size output for a full frame shot?
