OK so here's the thing, my gf has a female cat that's will be 13 y/o soon and has some age related maladies among other issues. On top of the feline diabetes and the urinary tract crystals, the cat (Oreo) also has glaucoma and a life long fish allergy. Well it seems that the fish allergy is now raging more so than ever and Oreo is ripping her hair out and despite our best efforts it would seem that pretty much all cat food has fish in it (even the DM dry cat food we give the cats at night has fish oil in it).

Long story short, I have found a brand called Before Grain that is fish free, having never heard of it before I don't know if i should trust it, seeing as it's way more expensive than the 9 Lives wet food we've been feeding them. To complicate things my cat (Buddy) whose will be 10 this year, has become particularly picky with the wet food.

So is Before Grain a good brand, or are there other brands that I can look into that don't have fish in them.

Poor critter. We've got a Siamese that was diagnosed with a diabetes a year and ahalf ago so I know what that's like. You'll be a pro at injections in no time (if you aren't already).

Take a walk down the food aisle at PetSmart, I know the one I go to here has a host of "hippified" vegetarian style cat foods. Vegetarian cat food, what has the world come to? You might even go to producers' websites and check out the composition of the various offerings there. Next time I go buy food I'll make sure and take a look for some non-fish stuff.

Good luck.

GF's sister is a veterinarian assistant and she just told us we could use a small amount of children's Benedryl to combat the fish allergy, either way I still would like to just stock up on food that doesn't have fish in it.

Dude Benadryl will knock those allergies right out, trust me on this, I too had a kitty cat with raging allergies. Don't bother with the childrens crap. Take the capsules, break them open, dissolve in some water, then use a big syringe (like the kind they give you when you get yer wisdom teeth out) to blast the mixture down kitty witty's throat. After they hate you and sulk for a minute, they pass the fugg out and wake up anew five hours later. Works every time.

As for the food part, um, you could cook for your cat. Plenty of recipes out there, and if you just plan on it, it shouldn't inconvenience you much. Ive got friends (multiple) who do this for their pets, and while I think they are all dumb for doing it, in your case it sounds like a legitimate option because of the cat's ailments and whatnot.

I looked around a few sites for you, and it seems that Before Grain Dry Food is not a fish free food. It contains Salmon Oil. The Wet however is fine.

Here is a link that someone else is looking for basically the same kind of food. http://www.thecatsite.com/foru...86490

It seems that these are fish free:Dry:-FELIDAE® Chicken & Rice formula-Natural Balance® L.I.D. Limited Ingredient Diets® Green Pea & Duck Formula for Cats

Wet:-Authority's lamb & rice formula-Avoderm Select Cuts Chicken canned-Blue Wilderness Chicken or Turkey canned (All can be found at Petsmart.)

I however just feed my three cats Nine Lives Growing years. If you need any other help, let me know, I am still technically a Vet Tech. So, if I can remember anything, I'll try to help.

EDIT: Oh and +1 on the benadryl.
