Has anyone actually fully plastidip'd their M? I've been thinking about it for a few weeks now and dipyourcar.com has the professional car kit that comes with 3 gallons of whatever color you choose, spray gun, tape, respirators, mix stick etc starting at $300. I have a couple of deep small scratches on the trunk and passenger side door and I was thinking I might as well change the whole color and cover those up at the same time. I don't know about you guys but I think anthracite grey with a light navy blue tint and some gloss would look sexy as **** on the M. Especially with my silver 20" Rennen wheels :chuckle: . Theres also nebula red ( ) Here is videos of both

I also want to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all the members on here that have aided me in getting my sexy beast looking exactly how I pictured when I first bought it last March. Y'all have seriously been a great help from posted replies, to write ups, to posted pictures and hints/tips.

Here are some pics of my transformation. These are pretty much all I will do to the M as I am satisfied with the way it handles and sounds. Barring off course a PlastiDip paint job. Upgrades are:

1. D2 coilovers F18/R20 (I had Tein H-techs right before I pulled the trigger on the D2's)
2. 20 inch rennen C10 wheels (F 255/35/20 / R 275/35/20 Hankook S1 Noble)
3. Roof spoiler (non-sarona)
4. Rear deck spoiler (now painted but not installed yet)
5. ECU/ECM reflash (mailed and waiting)

I'd be curious to see the result. I'd be willing to pay someone to change my car to white, if it's glossy enough, but I'm not about to drop $4k on a paint job lol.

White is a littler harder because you need more coats and the gloss finish is extra but defiantly not anywhere near 4K. Here in HTX they charge $880 to plastidip any matte color so gloss finish should't be more that $1200 with everything included. Then again you can spend less than $500 and do it your self. Easy to clean and easy to take off and looks really slick.

PlastiDip is amazing. Going to do my wheels next week and the whole car before the winter comes. Probably by the end of the month if i have the available time.

We had an M at the 3rd M BBQ/ meet in NJ which was done all in white.

His user name was finikM35 and he was from NY

You may want to do a search with his user name, you might find some pics.

Thanks Freddie.

You other guys post pics in this thread when you're done if you do it and I'll possibly sticky this or add it to the FAQ.

I wanted white with the extra gloss but was told if you live in a climate with harsh winters and salt your colour will change to a yellow. Its also more difficult to keep white clean unless you can get the plastidip sealed somehow.

I had my car fully plasti-dipped a couple years ago. I had it done because I wanted to lessen the appearance of some damage without spending several thousand dollars. I had a guy do some body repairs (with pulling and fiberglass, no panel replacement and not to pristine condition) and plasti-dip the whole car to prevent rust without having to pay for paint and blending. He had never done it before and was going for a silver metallic look. It took more than 3 gallons and he ran out of metalizer. I think he probably used too much metalizer because he didn't do it right and was stuck trying to even it out, but I really don't know. Either way, the end result was my car looked like it had been sprayed with aluminum / silver color spray paint cans. He also screwed up in a couple places. For instance, he didn't cut around the first door before opening it, so it pulled off of the column, and where he did cut around, sometimes the cutting pulled, so there was a loose spot on the front of the roof. Even in those places, where paint was slightly visible, it stuck pretty good for a couple years. I bought some touch-up spray on Amazon and then peeled the dip and painted the repaired spots on July 4th because the roof was starting to peel back enough that I was worried about paint discoloration from the sun where he had screwed up (the spot on the front of the roof is the only one that peeled at all in that 20-30K miles). The front bumper still has the silver plasti-dip on it in the middle because it stuck to every rock chip and I got tired of trying to peel it all. The lower edge of the car still has the base coat all the way around it because he got it on too thin and it won't really peel. The mirrors and a couple other spots (one spot on a door and one spot on the roof) also still have some dip on them because it was too thin to peel. All of those spots could probably be removed pretty easily with the right tool (I've seen a tool that goes on a drill and looks like an eraser and removes stickers with ease, can't imagine it having any trouble with the remaining dip, but I don't have one to verify). For some reason, the guy felt the need to remove the chrome trim from the front of the hood and broke every clip. He glued it back on and didn't tell me, so it fell off not too long after that and I haven't replaced it. After peeling, I noticed that the plastic curved piece at the bottom rear corner of the rear doors is yellowed (car was ivory pearl). I don't know if that's from age or if the plasti-dip could have somehow caused it. I was going to get the dip disolver, but it says not to use it on plastic trim, and most of the dip I need to get off is on or around plastic trim. I guess my experience was pretty dismal, but I don't really care with the miles I have on the car. That having been said, even if I practically got scammed, the guy's first whole-car dip experience on my car provides a few potential points for anyone considering doing it themselves.

Some good points. The individual I contacted was a professional. He had performed dips on lamborginis, mercedes, porches, audis etc and has the references to back him. He said for maintenance free dip it's best to clean/wax the car before the application he takes care of the rest.

Sorry to hear about your experience that would really piss me off.

All the reviews I've seen on youtube and the net have all been good. Its absolutely key to make sure you put enough coats down and obviously wash your car before hand.

I think I'm going to buy the DIY kit in a couple of months and and do a 2 red base coats and then 3-5 brown. That way I get a nice shade of brown that depend by the red. Put some glossifier coats on top and thats that. I'll do a write up if no one gets theirs done before me.

and now ... my 2 pence:

I reckon 99% of the horror stories we hear about Plasti-Dip are the result of people who caused their own trouble. Seems people buy some dip and spray their car without reading or following directions. Even paying to have it done is no guarantee that the job will done properly.
Plasti-Dip requires specific preparation of the car as well as proper spraying equipment, and specific spray technique.
There is a website called DipYourCar (link below) that has tons of tutorials with proper spray equipment, proper mixing technique, and detailed mixing instructions as well as proper spraying technique. Like any painting job, the car must be prepared and bone dry. The least bit of moisture on the surface will ruin the job. Also, regardless of the final colour you want, at least 2-3 base coats of gray or black will be required BEFORE you apply your coats of the actual color you are going after. By the time you finish your dip job, there should be at least 5-6 coats of dip on the car.
