Hatchbacks rock, plain and simple. There aren't many sedans I can think of where the lines flow as smoothly as most hatchbacks.. and in particular, the V Sedan's lines in the rear do NOT flow, it seems obvious that the sedan platform was an afterthought... WAY after thought.
The thing is that here in the US, we have been bombarded and trained from our youth that you're not cool or you're less of a driver if you don't own a sedan or a coupe. That gave way substantially with the widespread use of SUV's... which were considered the WAY more cool alternative to a wagon.
It doesn't help that some of the earlier Japanese hatchbacks here in the US were basically gas cans on 12 or 13" steel rims. Heck, the cheapest imported car for many years was a Subaru hatchback that didn't even include full carpeting or even a trip odometer!
How far they have come... and how far they have yet to go.
PS - to those who say the sedan has clearly more visibility than the hatch.... sorry, but no. Got to play around in a sedan a while the other day and the fields of vision were almost exactly the same... I'd have to give the edge to the HB in that you know exactly where the rear bumper is: 4" behind your rear glass.
