Why risk ruining a good set of wheels?

The Original Equipment Alloy wheels on Infiniti vehicles are specifically developed in order to achieve the Infiniti design and performance standards. These Original Equipment wheels are also subject to rigorous testing procedures to ensure they meet Infiniti's standards. Infiniti cannot ensure that aftermarket chroming of the Original Equipment Alloy wheels meets these same standards, and therefore Infiniti does not recommend their use, or guarantee their performance.
Indeed, if these alloy wheels are subjected to aftermarket chroming, there are potential problems which may occur as a result of the chroming process:
1. The chroming process removes the original paint coating and this is achieved by "burning" or "chemical" methods, both of which cause the alloy surface to be changed. The application of chrome plating has to be controlled correctly, as the alloy can be harmed by a poorly controlled process.
2. Overall aftermarket chroming of alloy wheels may degrade the durability, long term appearance, and may affect safety and performance of the wheels.Accordingly, Infiniti recommends that Original Equipment wheels not be chrome plated.
Please consult the Infiniti Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual pertaining to the Dealer's responsibility when altering or modifying vehicles.

In short (from what I've read here and elsewhere) the chroming process will effect the structural integrity of the rims/wheel. And given the high load rating required by the Q to begin with it could put you "at risk" for a rim failure. That failure could be as slight as the rim becoming out of round and accelerating tire wear. On 15's you may feel that's an acceptable "cost", but given the price of 17" or 18" tires I would stay away from a rim that wasn't chromed as part of the construction (including in the deisgn).
