Found this valve cover on E-Bay $30.00.  Their $25.00 at the Pick-A-Part, but not near as cool.  I was going to d a before and after, but I already got started before I took the picture, It is just started.  The valves have started tapping so when I finsh the shine job, I will adjust the valves then put on the new "Dastsun 1600 OHC" cover, with the cam type oil cap.

P.S. it will shine nice

This is my third one also, needless to say my wife was not very happy to see it come in the mail.  I think it originally came on the little 1600 convertables? I know that they are early, with the cam type oil filler cap, not the plastic threaded one.

It's not from a 1600 roadster otherwise it wouldn't fit your L16.  The one with the cam type oil cap is from the earliest L16 w/o a smog pump such as 68 510.  The later changed to the screw in cap in 69 when the pump was added.  The transition from 'Datsun 1600 OHC' to 'Datsun OHC' was later in 69.  They later ones said 'Nissan OHC'.

[font="georgia"]Some good info there. How are you polishing the valve cover? On mine i 1st wet sanded it with 1500 grit, then im using a polishing wheel mounted to my Makita grinder & I buff it a few times with the brown rouge followed up by the white rouge.

This one was bead blasted, so had some deep pits.  The object is to get all th scratches going in the same direction, for me 220, 320, 480, 1000, then my favorite compound MET-ALL, this stuff will even shine the scratches, but I like to make them disappear.  This is what we used to use on the American Airlines jets.

[font="georgia"]Where could I buy some of the MET-ALL? After the rouges i use Mothers alluminum polish by hand then buff again.

This is with 400 grit scratches and a few minutes with Never Dull "magic wadding" which should be comercially available. I does not due near the job as Mett-All but I still think it looks pretty good

Heres the web site for met-all WWW.met-all.com, they'll be able to tell you where to get it in your area.  Any good auto body supply shop should have it

[font="georgia"]Thanks for the link. I will eventually like to replace my valve cover because it has a big gauge going down the pass side of it. I hope to get mine looking as good as yours.

This one had some gouges I blended them out with a 2" blue rolock disc on a hi-speed di-grinder then the progressive sand paper. 71 looks like you have quite a collection. I you want a shiny one I would be willing to do that for you.  I like to keep these little trucks smiling!\ \

I just may have to take you up on that offer...and give you the best one of all for your efforts. Do you have a spare "Datsun 1600 OHC" one you'd be willing to sell me as I have a few of the "Datsun OHC" ones... All I really need is one of each...

give me a hollar the next time you head down this way...:D

Met-All! small container for 1.99! needless to say, I'm going to buy at least one tomorrow and give it a try myself!

Found some at Big Lots! Cool have fun, rember get the scratches going the same Direction, then Met-All it, I used Bronze Wool (fine) you could probally use #000, or #0000 steel, but sometimes it will break off and embed itself in the aluminum, causing rust stains, or dis-smilar metl corrosion aka. electrolosis.
