So I just picked up a Holset from a buddy of mine. Story goes like this.. He had a spare Cummin's for his truck. He's running a banks turbo and only needs the motor. Gave me the turbo. Good stuff, right?

My issue is I can't figure out what the beans it is. Being an avid KA-T guy, and definitely good with searching the site and google, I can't find out what the heck it is. So here's some numbers if you think you can help. I can take pics if you need.

Turbine Side, Cast In Numbers:352193416 27 1214 C 712-Blade Turbine wheelPainted on numbers from a swap before: A3321929/05 (or) A5521927/03 Can't really read that well, as it was hand-written with a paint stick or something. Also, it's a NON-Wastegated turbine.

Compressor Side, Cast In NumbersN3W60 (or) N3W50

Compressor Tag:Says Cummins Remanufactured in USA.Kit: R5010960AAAssy: 3539911Serial: m 9179088-Blade Compressor WheelDoesn't say anything about Model or anything, so I'm stumped.

I apologize, but apparently I'm having a brainfart and can't figure this out myself. I'm posting this around to a few forums to try and get some insight.

If its from a dodge cummings i can just ID it visually. Toss up a pic. Do you happen to know the year it came off of? That would help as well.

Much appreciated. I tried a few of those sites, even myholsetturbo.com or something like that. I just get what year motor, and transmission possibilities. I can't seem to get the housing size, frame size, etc.You can see by the pics, the tag on the compressor is a bit different than what I have found.

Some more info for you guys. Turbine is bolt/clamp to the center section. The compressor is held on with a giant snap ring.

But here's some pics. Sorry for the crappy cell phone shots. All my stuff is packed and ready to move out.

Looks like an HX35. It definitely came off of a Cummings pre 03, you can tell by the dump/down pipe. So that most likely is the genuine article.

So how do I figure out the turbine size? Like the CM or whatever they are measured with? And it's a split turbine inlet. Should I grind that to a point? Or try to remove some of it? Maybe round it?

Sorry, but I spent all day yesterday, and most of today trying to figure this thing out. I'm toast. Just want to get it ironed out and plan accordingly for the new build.

Yeah, especially compared to my T2 hotsided GT3076R.

My ultimate goal is to put this turbo on my car, and get a C4 with an adapter and track it for a while. Then pull the 'drag' setup out, and turn my car back into a daily/weekend toy. And put the Holset/C4 into a dedicated drag car with a KA.

Hopes and dreams. But I appreciate all the info so far. I'm such a waste of my employers payroll right now. lol

The best thing to do for the turbo is just get a custom housing for it. A 'standard' t3 sized housing machined to fit that wheel. Its not so much a custom housing anymore, a few companies make a housing for that exact same turbo for the performance world. This however costs money lol.

There are no markings on the throat of the turbine housing?

On the opposite side of this square red box, is the set of numbers 14 C 7.Pretty much if you were looking at the turbine outlet, it's on that leg there.

Yessir. I've talked to him a few times. I can't wait to get back down there and meet the locals. I've been gone a few years and lost touch with lots of friends too.

But I'm still stuck on the Holset. I got some insight on another forum that it is most likely the 12cm turbine housing, but that's all I got so far. Such a common turbo, yet we don't know much about them. I've yet to come across a compressor map.

Anyways, thanks again guys. I'll be checking back throughout the day.

Eric, Tim has told me that your turbo, with that part number is 95 percent certain a HX35, so you probably have the genuine article.

Email the first
Timsturbos wrote: The Hx35 will have a snap ring to hold the compressor cover on. The H1C will use a V-Band clamp to hold the comp cover on. They all Use bolts to hold on the turbine hsg except for The Hy35 which uses a v-band clamp. It should be a Hx35 with that part number. He probably has the upgrade turbine housing on it. It would be a 16cm non-wastegated. They came on the 1995 trucks.

Werd. If it is indeed the 16cm, then I guess I need to swap it for something a bit smaller. I thought I got it easy not being a wastegated housing. lol

I'll try to find some of these aftermarket housings. I'm on the ex's computer right now, but I'll try to get some seat time if I can.

Thanks again.

I found this forum while looking up Holset info on Google. I recently purchased and rebuilt an HX35W (12cm^2 turbine housing).I would much rather have a non-wastegated 12cm^2 housing. Have any of you seen one of these in a stock application?

I know that Hightechturbo sells them for $235 (http://www.htturbo.com/thnew.htm), but I was hoping to find a used one for cheaper.

Oh yeah, here's a Holset PN list I came across recently with turbine sizes:

That's good information. Someone should snag that and put it with the Holset thread. Much appreciated!

So by the looks of that chart, my turbo should have a 12cm wastegated housing. But it's not wastegated. So who the eff' knows...

I appreciate the effort guys. I think I'm just going to run what I got, and hope for the best.

And is there any way I can 'measure' the housing and get some more insight? I'm stumped.

Worst case, I get a new housing. But then that turns this free-bee into something that is costing me out of pocket..

What someone most likely did is use that turbo that originally came with a wastegated housing with a swapped wastegated housing from an older dodge. The user probably wanted an external gate.

Not sure my brother. I can only speculate. But the motor on the stand that this turbo came off of, had the stock exhaust manifold with no external gate. So I guess this thing was running without a wastegate.

I'm at a loss. I looked at TimsTurbos.com today and didn't see much for Bullseye housings for this. Any other ideas for aftermarket housings? I'm trying to do this while at work, so it's a bit sketchy.

^Replied good sir.

I e-mailed Bullseye directly and I got a response. Pretty much a .70 a/r turbine housing with v-band for 225 bucks. That's all the info I got on it. I don't know if it's the stainless one, or how big the v-band is.I have some other questions into him right now, and hope to get a response soon.

I'm still looking around for the housings. Google pwnz me. I did come up with this though. http://www.htturbo.com/th.htm

Don't know if it's around here, or if the information is accurate... But here's what I dug up for the turbine housings.12cm is .87 A/R16cm is 1.12 A/R

Also, I don't know if I mentioned it, but I have a divided turbine on that Holset. Now, if it is indeed a 12cm housing at .87 a/r, and divided, would there be any benefit to getting a twin scroll manifold to aid in spool, and utilize the top end benefits of the large turbine?

Just some info to chew on.

Yea thats about the price lol. BEP housings are pretty good now adays actually, they have come leaps and bounds. New massive inhouse machine shop FTW.

There is other stuff availible, they just gave you the common housing that they think will work best, and to max the compressor wheel out i believe a .70 might be ideals Again, there is a .55 available too i believe.

Getting a quality divided manifold is reallly expensive. In addition, your still looking at a ~1 ar, which is just to big regardless of if its divided or not.

Thanks again for the help. I'll be plugging around looking for some more stuff for the new build. If anyone has parts, let me know. I need just about anything I can get my hands on.

Honestly dude, look at it like this. You got a kick a** turbo. All you need to do is drop at max 250 on it and its a monster for a Ka and your goals. Those things can push 30 psi efficiently i believe.
