Just recently picked up a N/A 90 300ZX,just had a new key cut the other day as the original owner couldn't find the original. The new key works on the doors just not the ignition. Not sure if this will help, but had to remove ignition switch from steering column to turn the steering wheel. No I didn't hack it.Thank you for any help.

on older cars, the keys have jangled around in someones pocket for decades, the teeth wear down and then the lock also wear differently. because the ignition is the most exposed to the worn key, its common for newly cut keys to not work in the ignition. if you already tried turning the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the ignition key, then its probably just worn or maybe there were always two keys to the vehicle.

the simple solution is to take your lock cylinder to an automotive locksmith and ask them to repin it to the key you have. it only costs about USD$15-20 to have a lock repinned. they will clean and lubricate the lock as well. its also possible that the previous owner had trouble with the key and tried to lubricate it with something like WD-40 when it became worn instead of graphite. while you're at the locksmith ask for a small pack of graphite to do your other locks.
