I checked out the FAQ about autocross info & found it very informative. I purchased this car, the 100 dollar '93 fastback, primarily to have something to learn autocross technique, although I've been driving it daily, as it seems to be happy on 87 octane, where the Suby SVX drinks only 93. I did my first attempts at the sport this Sunday, and am now hooked. I probably ran a bit too conservatively, but turned an average 44 seconds when the fastest cars of the lot turned around 36 - 37 seconds. This is a bone stock '93 with 229K on the clock, origional clutch & suspension, & running non-descript half-worn Sears all-weather tires. I ran 40 lbs front & rear.I'm not looking to drop tons of mods into this car, & would prefer to stay in G stock. I realize that a true racing tire would be the best bang for the buck, but what else would you recommend doing to the car to keep it a "cheap thrills" vehicle? Would a tankful of higher octane fuel offer any real performance advantage? I'm also aware that driver technique is far more important than raw power. Any other hints from Heloise out there? Thanks in advance - Ron.

If you are staying in stock class, all I need to say is Falken Azenis: http://www.falkentire.com/tires/az_rs_infopg.htm. They are practically race tyres but relatively cheap and can be used for daily driving. You got 4 or 5 lug on yer '93?

take your pressure down to 29, thats what its supposed to be, look at the sticker in the glove box you can even reduce it more for a little additional traction, experiment in an empty lot. also, youl probobly need a new clutch soon, 229k on original is a lot

i run 40 psi in my azenis. you dont get any rollover on the sidewalls and will have much more perdictable handling instead of underinlfated tires. i am going tanabe springs and agx when i get money to do better in NSTS.

Thanks for the tips, so far, guys. It's a four lug wheel. I know the standard recommended inflation is 29 lbs, but I was advised to take'em to 40, mark the sidewalls with white shoe polish, then deflate until the rubbing showsat the proper point. I didn't bother to deflate. Maybe the next run!Yes, this car was an unusual find, as I got it from the original owner who bought it when he was 50 years old & did a lot of long commute miles, but never abused it. He's 60 now....three years younger than I. Ha-ha....now comes the belated abuse.

The secret is to never grow up!

Ron (growing older & no more).
