Hi!

I'm considering getting a '90 or '95 240sx, the 1990 being the most likely.

My biggest concern is how much work will I have to face to fix problems it may have. In other words, in 2004, how reliable is the motor and the transmission going to be (for 5 speed or automatic), if we estimate that it has around 100,000 miles on it?

What issues should I be aware of? I figure it would be a good project car to make look good, but I don't want to pour any money into the mechanicals if not need be. Perhaps I should consider a 1995 240sx (I did find a '95 that I like, but it's a rebuild...not sure what to do there)?

Any advice you can give is appreciated!

That is a baby. I had 175,000 miles on my 91 5spd before the timing chain went bad. I just decided to get a newer on and sell the old one. It was still running with a bad timing chain when i sold it for 2k.

Ron: It's very common to get 200K+ out of the original motors if they were maintained well and not abused (drifting/drag racing/burnouts/etc). I sold my '89 S13 at 190K and it was still running great. I didn't start replacing things until about 140K. The clutch slave cylinder started leaking, the OEM radio died, and the front struts finally wore out. I never had a problem with the timing chain. Of course I was the only owner, had a good mechanic and she was garage kept. But knowing the vehicles maintenance history is a huge advantage as it'll give you some insight. Buying off a dealer lot risky, so it's best to have a mechanic you trust check it over before taking the plunge.good luck

138k of pure illegal torture on the ol KA and it finally went out

I highly doubt you drive as hard as I do so the 240 should live for 150k+ :)

Buy one you'll love it!
