Im sorry if i sound like a total noob, but I kinda am and id like to learn more. My first question would be about passing smog. I just bought the car and the registration is good until aug 05. the pink slip is signed over to me but id still like to get it registered to my name as soon as possible. People told me that I would need to smog it before I can change owner/register under my name. I am concerned because the car has an aftermarket air filter (just the filter, not the entire tubing). The little black box that is located above the filter that has a tube coming out towards the air filter. The end of this tube is not attached to anything. My friend told me that the tube that sticks out is supposed to plug into the stock air box, and that I would need to put the stock air box back in, in order to pass smog. Is this true? Im sorry if I dont know all the technical terms to refter to them like ABGSVCKDE valve-pump-gasket, any help would be appreciated.

edit* i have a 91' 240sx coupe with a stock motor

that wont affect the smog(at least not that much so ya can't pass), it should pass emissions if ya don't see any white/blue smoke comin out of the exhaust.thats a breather that throws fresh air to the exhaust, if you want you can put a filter on that.(i did it on mine so i could put a cold air intake).and you don't need to pass the vehicle inspection(or emissions testing) to register the car under your name, but if its expired, you will eventually, you don't want a ticket for havin an expired state inspection sticker.

In CA you will not pass the visual unless you have a C.A.R.B. exemption sticker. Just look around for a stock airbox or spend some $$$ and get the AEM intake, it's legal in CA.

When the key is turned in accessory mode, the engine check light stays on. When I start my car, it is off most of the time, but every here and there it will turn on. Someone told me that if it comes on anytime during the smog check, you get an automatic fail. Can anyone verify if this is true or not? My engine runs fine, but my friend told me the light turns on sometimes because I need to clean out my breather box and EGR valve. If this is so, where could I go to get it done and about how much would it cost? Can someone please give me their opinion, or verify any of this info?

I just need to figure out what I need to do to pass smog so I can go ahead and transfer the title and register the car to my name. My engine runs fine, no sort of odd smoke. It has an aftermarket air filter (just the filter) which replaces the stock airbox. It also has a breather filter attached to the breather hose. The check engine light turns on once in a blue moon, which a friend said was due to the breather box being dirty, and a dirty EGR valve. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you will fail automatically in cali if they see the CEL. But that depends on where you go. Come on man! you're in LA, there's plenty of places to pass . The filter itself will be fine because you only did the filter, not the CAI. You shouldn't run into a problem unless it's a very stuck up the *** place.

Just do the basics before you smog, like oil change, 91 gas, octane booster (just in case), warm up car for 15-30 minutes before bringing it to the place, etc.
