I'm looking around for a fun car to fix up and learn some things from. I thought the 240sx would be a good car to learn from, but I am wondering if it is a complicated car to work on. I've done a bit of research on the 240, and came up with a few questions. I have my heart set on getting a 240sx, but

-Is there anything wrong with the 95 S14 year? i found a lot more of the 95's than the 96's. I prefer the zenki look than the kouki.

-Whats the diff. b/w the standard 240sx and the Se model?

-how good is the Ka24de engine?

I have my heart set on getting a 240sx, but was wondering what other fun cars are out there that are also RWD.

thanks

I've read one article about small problems with the 95 year model like AC seals failing and a brake fluid warning light that would short out and not light up when your fluid was low (was actually covered in a recall...) but I have never experienced any of those problems. The 95 is maybe a little more preferable due to the fact that it is OBD I (where as 96-98 were OBD II. not really a problem unless you want do do big power work to the engine)

-Standard model usually has less standard features, usually no fog lights and 4lug hubs, the se has fog lights, 5 lug hubs (more wheel selection, easier to do a 300zx brake swap on as well)ABS was an option on both models and included a viscous limited slip differential. so if you have abs, you have an LSD as well, if not, you get the one tire fire burnouts of an open diff SE models also come with a rear stabilizer (anti-roll) bar, base models don't

the KA24 is an awesome engine. with a turbo and proper tuning, it can easily hold 300+ horespower. it has a timing chain instead of a belt, so it should be maintenence free. Some of us hear our chains rattling due to 2 upper chain guides that need to be removed, but mine has been rattling slightly since i bought it 2 years ago and hasn't got any worse, and i am not easy on my engine.Just make sure it has been taken care of, and keep the oil changed regularly. I have found synthetic valvoline 10w30 to be a great oil, but many like mobile one, etc. etc.

other RWD cars to look for are RX-7's (FC's are pretty affordable) mkIII supras, miata

Buy my S14

$8000 and its yours ... comes with spare SR engine

Full suspension, 2400 lbs., BPU SR, FN01R-C's w/ new tires (good tires)

Looks like the one above in his sig, only gutted, caged, carbon hood, black 9" - 10" FN01R-C's.

thanks for the help bronze MFP. But what is OBD? i have never heard of this term before.

I also read about the recall and some of the problems in a 95 s14. I would really like this car to last a long time, 10+ years from the time i purchase it. When the time comes, I would be willing to replace the engine with a similar ka24de engine. So all I am worried about is if the rest of the car will last. eg. electronics, AC, suspension.

Like if you had a choice, which would you get, a '95 or a '96 S14?

_thanks!

"On-Board Diagnostics, or "OBD," is a computer-based system built into all 1996 and later light-duty vehicles and trucks, as required by the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. OBD systems are designed to monitor the performance of some of an engine's major components including those responsible for controlling emissions."

The mr2 is mid engine, and that (mr2), the RX-7(as far as I know) and the miata are 2 seaters if that's a concern. 300ZX's & 350Z's are also RWD.

SEs tend to be more desired over the base. If it has ABS it has a vlsd.

I heard 95 dodge neons are fun cars. If you have your heart set on rwd a chevette will never disappoint. If you spend the big bucks I heard the new VW bettles have daisy holders.

If you get a 240 get the one with out the truck engine.

in my search for a RWD car to have fun with, i fell in love (and bought) a 240sx. however other options of mine were.

-rx-7 FC-MR2-miata mx-5-honda prelude (Front wheel drive)-Toyota Celica (Front wheel drive)-Toyota Supra-bugatti veyron (what?)-the batmobile-dukes of hazard "General" 1970 Dodge charger-apollo 12

however you can also go to http://www.evolutionimports.com and buy a sweet 180sx off of the guy there. you'll have to have it shipped up from florida but you should check him out. he takes japanese cars and makes them legal in america with all their stock parts.
