Have a newbie question. What is the best way to torque the crankshaft pulley on a 97 Nissan Maxima?

Yea, I'm using a torque wrench. However when tightening the motor turns over. Perhaps I should have asked how to lock up the motor or pulley so I can get it tightened to spec. Thanks. I do have an automatic transmission.

I think you need to remove the oil pan and put a screwdriver on the "signal teeth" or
crankshaft gear. Check out the engine mechanical section

You need a chain wrench (chain pipe wrench) and anchor it while turning the torque wrench. You may need something to wrap around the pulley to prevent damage from the chain wrench.
