Hi, All!

I've been lurking for a couple of days in here, and this is my first post. You guys seem like a friendly lot so I am glad that I found you.

I am excited to purchase my first car, and I've been narrowing down my choices in cars for the last year. I had seriously considered the Mercedes e350 AWD and loved the luxe interior of the burl wood trim and the exterior and classic headlights of it prior to the 2010 change. I just don't think it looks as special on the outside anymore. Anyway, I'm in the Inifiniti forum now so enough talk about that!

After some consideration, I am seriously thinking about purchasing the g37x AWD sedan instead. I love the classic yet sporty look of it with the spoiler added to its trunk. To be honest, I am not so interested in the power of its engine * I fully expect collective gasps from the members now *. I am not really into the speed or power of its engine.

I just love the look of the g37x exterior especially in Platinum Graphite. I have only seen the 2009 g37 sedans, and I was slightly disappointed by its interior.

However, I have read some specs for the 2010 g37 sedan. The following description caught my eye: "heritage-inspired interior." Does that mean it will look more luxe and traditional inside like the Mercedes e350? I suppose we can only guess, but I'd love to know. I have only seen the pics of the rosewood trim online and I do not think it looks near as nice as the glossy burl of the E350. I hope the "heritage-inspired interior" will be a change that includes a prettier looking wood trim on the inside. Is that what it means to you? I know a lot guys love the wasabi wash trim that gives it it's modern and clean appearance, but I'm more of a traditional gal when it comes to the interior I guess.

Also, I was wondering if anyone with the g37x AWD sedan can tell me how the noise level is on the highway. My hubby and I would love to be able to listen to audio books on long trips without having the speaker on full blast. We often take long road trips too...as long as 14 hour ones. Is it a comfortable ride?

I test drove a Lexus ES, but I was not used to its steering. It seemed like it needed such a light touch in order to make turns and that made me nervous. I'm sure that is something I could get used to, but the exterior of the car left a lot to be desired for me. I am sure it would have been a supremely quiet ride, but I can't get over the fact that the Infiniti G37 has so much more style than the ES.

Anyway, this is probably too long of a post, but I look forward to reading any comments or thoughts!

Welcome!

I don't know if I can be of much help to you since I have a coupe, and luxe means nothing to me.....it is just a +. I can tell you that these cars are very quiet inside. When I honk my horn, I can barely hear it. I almost got T-boned by a firetruck once because I couldn't hear it either.

These are very nice cars. You will appreciate the H.P. when you are trying to get on an interstate or pass somebody.

Maybe you should jump into an M35. The G is more sport than luxury, though I find them to be more than luxurious for my simple tastes. I don't think the upcoming G will be much different as far as the interior goes. The Next M coming out this time next year will be something special. The G won't get a big luxury uptrimming until around 2012. But everyone has different opinions and tastes. Here its all about sportiness.

Thanks, Guys!

Well, I just took a look at the M online. It is a beautiful car. However, it kind of reminds me of a Camry from the side (nothing wrong with that!). I think I prefer the G37 because of its cute, shorter butt and sportier look. I'm *relatively* youngish with no kids so I think I'd like smaller car for now. I may prefer the M for the next go, but I probably need to go back to the dealership and compare the two more closely.

I've heard that the 2010s won't be for sale until January. However, will most dealerships have the cars out before then so we can take a look?

08.black.G37, I had not thought about the advantage of being able to merge onto the interstate and passing others more with quickly with more horsepower. That is certainly a plus. I am surprised to hear that it is such a quiet ride. That makes me happy. For some reason, I thought that was not the case. However, maybe I am confused. Maybe its supposed to be a bumpier ride but not necessarily a noisier one?

Is there anyone on here who drives the 37 sedan and can tell me if it's good for 12-14 hour road trips? I have not taken a test drive yet. That will probably make the decision easier to make.

Welcome to NICO Christine

I can't speak for the AWD as I only drive a 6 speed manual but I have driven my 06 Sedan a few times to Florida from NJ which is a 1230 mile trip each way with no backache or being uncomfortable on long drives with 12 hours behind the wheel.

I also drive 100mi per day for work and my G is a very fun and comfortable vehicle to drive.

The G is much more comfortable for long trips than a Lexus. IMHO

I recently test drove a 2009 G37 6 speed sedan. It handled very well and I loved it.

I recently spent a whole Saturday test driving the G37 at multiple dealers.

I hate shopping but car shopping is the only shopping that I enjoy.

Good luck with your search

Yea the G isn't cute, its sexy. gorgeous. The think you'll notice about all Infiniti vehicles is that they are all "Drivers' Vehicles". They are designed to revolve around the driver and give an experience. Its not about isolation or time warp. The engineers make the vehicles for the purpose of the drive. Thats what I love about them. Its what I don't like about other car companies. Some cadillacs and lincolns, some mercedes and bmw, and lexus as well, focus on the image and the features of the vehicle rather than the actual dynamics. Its like having a beautiful looking dinner that tastes nasty. Or a supermodel that does absolutely nothing outside of looking pretty. I want some form and function with my good looks.

You sound like my aunt who bought a G because she thinks it looked good but she was driving a cadillac and then bought a G and it is way to hard for her...

You need to drive them and see what you like...

Don't buy until you are really sure that is what you want.

Hi there, thanks again for the responses!

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend the g37 by calling it cute. I meant it as a compliment! : ) When I say "cute," I mean I find it attractive. For example, the VW bug is cute in a literal, cartoonish way but I do not find it attractive so I would never say that I thought the VW bug is cute. However, I think the g37 looks beautiful, sporty and classic (and yes, it's sexy) so it is very cute to me! However, maybe I should refrain from using that term on here. :P

Telcoman, I'm glad to know that you can take such long trips in it and not feel cramped or achy from the drive. I would think a daily 100 mile commute would necessitate a comfortable ride too so in that case, I would assume it is a very comfortable ride. I really need to take a test drive. I'm so curious now!

Again, I do love the look of it. I'm all for the "driver's experience" but I just wished the inside looked as nice as the outside does to me. Is that too much to ask for? : ) I just wonder if the "heritage inspired interior" which is being used to describe the 2010 g37 sedan would mean a Japanese heritage inspired interior rather than the old world inspired interior which is what I love about the inside of the e350 2009 models and back.

I suppose I will have to wait and see. Maybe the wood trim looks better in person. I have only seen the wood trim online. The dealership I visited only had the wasabi trim in the cars that I looked at.

Does anyone have actual pics of the wood trim interior? I think I am leaning towards the black and rosewood option, but any actual pics of the wood trim in any color combo would be great to see. I wouldn't mind the wheat and wood look either but it does not come in that combo for the platinum graphite model.

Thanks again for all the great advice and input!

Autochick, I hope this helps...I've owned the Mercedes, a M35X andnow a G37X. They are all very different and the more time behindthe wheels, the more prominent the differences. My opinions willno doubt anger some here, but I'll remind those that I am anInfiniti guy too.

The Mercedes is much more refined...much smoother powertrainMuch smoother 4WD system on slippery/icey roads, muchquieter interior (almost eery quiet) with no "road noise"and considerably higher price. Lacks the steering and brakefeel that the M has, but has the indescribeable Germanfeeling like it's made out of one piece of metal and isglued to the road. Best combination of luxuryride qualities and sporty handling.

The M35...instant throttle response, the best steering and brakefeedback to the driver ever....almost make the driver feel likepart of the car....Near equal to the 3 series BMW. Nice interiorbut not as nice as the Merc. Way to much road and cabinnoise for a $53k car....new tires and undercoating helped.4WD system is real quirky whencornering on slippery/ice/snow. Ride quality takes a back seatto the performance handling The new M should have considerableupdates....I can't wait to get one ASAP

The G37. considerably smaller, but if you want sporty and don'thaul passengers but need a 4 door....best bucks worth.Quirky 7At even after update, delayed throttle response butway better gas mileage. Steering and brakes don't providethe driver confidence that the M does...which has suprised me.Ride and noise levels on par with the M, but not even closeto the Merc. Interior not as luxurious, well appointed, comfortableor as big...but it's an entry level luxury car and probably thebest one by far for the money.

Hope this helps

I love to drive my G (coupe). I always take the longest route home or find reasons to get out of the house and drive somewhere.

The only thing I dislike about the G is the seatbelts on the driver and passenger side. Always get crush between the door and the seat if you don't set it right when you get out of the car. Other then that I love it.

That was well put. Your review didn't anger me personally, but then I know I love my car! I am not a 'classic' looks kind of person. I got the G37x because I enjoy the modern looks of it. The Merc is definitely an upscale vehicle compared to the G, but it's all about personal style. My style likes -nay!- LOVES the look of the G, and I enjoy having a car that is not seen every single day...like Acura's and Lexus'. I also got it for reliability. I know that I will not have any issues with this car, as I have owned & known people with Nissans (& a few Infiniti's). The interior is louder than the Merc's, but is not loud by any means. Mine is a sport, so the wheels are a little bigger & tire profile is narrower. When the wife & I were shopping and we narrowed it down to the G, we knew we wanted the washi and not the wood...but that's all personal taste (and we both disliked it). Being in Colorado, we also knew we needed AWD, as this is a daily driver....haven't tested the AWD system yet, but everyone I have talked to has found it to be quite confident in the slippery stuff...guess I'll find out this weekend(snow's coming!) As I've owned it now for 5 months (8K miles), I have learned the quirks, and I guess I have found them livable. The throttle response at street start speeds is kind of weird...as it is hunting "does the driver want to floor it or just start going a little? I guess I'll wait to see if he puts the pedal to the floor". We have kids, so if we're going somewhere, I try not to take that, because it is somewhat cramped in the backseat for them (and - they aren't dirtying up my BRAND NEW CAR ) I had my folks with me this weekend, and they were comfy once they got in...but they didn't like getting in or out of the backseat. It is quite comfy for 2, and I haven't taken it on more than a 2-3 hour road trip so far....but it is a very nice ride. I have enjoyed all the amenities that the car has, and it's going to be a LOOOOONG time before I send this baby away to the car lot

Good luck in your decision, and hope that you make one that you are happy with, no matter what you choose. Hope that the input given has been helpful to you in some way.

Jandpharper, thank you for your unbiased review of the cars mentioned! I have to admit that you made me crave the e350 4matic once again. There is something about getting into a Merc and closing its doors. It's like a vault, and I feel secure and cocooned in luxury all at once. However, there is steep difference in pricing and that is what ultimately led me to chicken out of purchasing it my first go. Although I can afford it, I had some paranoia about driving it by myself in this economic climate. I think the Infiniti 37x Sedan is a beautiful car, but it doesn't call attention to itself the way a Merc does. I am hoping to do some test drives of the g37 this weekend!

Cjs37xs, like you, I also like the fact that that the Infiniti g37 is not a vehicle that you see on the road everyday. I actually see more Bimmers, Merc, Lexuses, Camry's and American cars on the road than I do Inifinitis. Actually, I do not remember seeing one on the road. I remember seeing one parked at a business location, and I've seen the coup once at a restaurant, but generally, I just don't see them, and I am pretty observant of other cars on the highway. I am not sure why that is since I have read such good reviews about the car. It's rated #2 in US News and World Reports in its class (the e350 #1 in its class).

Anyway, test drives are definitely in order! I will update you guys after get in the driver's seat!

I can see you want to be a little more "unique" and less "status minded" than the typical E-class owner. The new M might be better suited for you. I would totally go for it but in terms of size, it's just too much for me as a daily driver. But ... I personally think is looks better than the E-class.

I had trips in the G almost 18 hours and had no issue at all. I actually took the family and my son's best friend with us and had no issue with them either. Both 14 years of age sitting at the back.

Anyways Out of the 3 I would still pick the G and for second I would probably pick the E350.

The 2 cars did not aimed for the same crowd. I came from SAAB 9-5 and wanted something smaller and not as boring(not bashing) Europian interior. The G fitts in this with more dramatic line and curves with more sportiness and modern interior. Something more unique than the usual europian interior.

I would take the E350 over the M35 anytime. Although I have to admit I never tried the E350 but it has nicer exterior/interior than the M35. I think the M35x just feels to big and slow same interior as any other luxury brand. Not that is a bad thing I just prefer a little more modern style. Now if we look at the new M56 which looks like a G on steroid. Well it might be a different story. But I have to see/drive that personally.

You can even check out the Hyundai Genesis sedan since it has more bells and whistles than the M with better warranty for maybe around the same $$. Whenever I drive the more " upscaled" luxury cars I feel like I aged 15-20 years.

Test drive all and see which one you like. Let us know for sure but I think you better off with the MB.

If you get the 3.5 engine with the S/C you get my vote for sure. Not sure if the E350 has it. EDIT*And don't get the diesel engine in the mercedes. I was reading about they haing some serious issue with the smaller diesel in them. I've read it on Europian sites so it might only been in Europian engines. Not sure.

I've been on trips in the front and the back of our G35 Sedan and was very comphy!!! I'm 6 feet even and 200+ pounds.

In regard to the G and M comparison, I did not like the driving feel of the M. I wanted a sportier feel. The M was a little too big for me...for a sports sedan...for my taste.

Our G sedan fits the bill nicely as a sporty sports sedan.Have also driven several G37 sedans (loaners) and was very impressed. Almost pulled the trigger on a new one, but now that our youngest is driving AND our insurance went up $188 per month!!! We've decided to not trade (we only have 36K on the G sedan anyway.)

hi folks new here myself.

on the verge of buying an 09 G37x, and not quite sure what to do.

I have an 07 Honda Civic Si Sedan with only 8600 miles on it. so it has a lot of value left in it for trading. the dealer is selling the G37x below invoice, and giving me top trade in value for the Si.

So it should be a no brainer right?

not as easy to decide as i thought.

anyway, from what i have researched and read, the G37 is a great car. I've driven one and loved it. The Nav on it is great too, esp. the 10GB hard drive for storing music, and the back up camera that even shows where the car will go depending on how your turn the wheel. amazing.

if anyone out there has any other ways of informing my final decision, please post here, and i'll read them.

thanks!
