Hi, I am Lance in Kentucky...I have a 1981 Datsun 720 4x4 that was my dads. Only has about 20,000 miles on it and has been sitting in the barn for the last 5 years. Going to attempt to get it going again. Will start but idles rough for a few seconds and floods out. When you switch the key on you immediately begin hearing fuel dump in the carb. I am thinking about just getting a weber carb conversion and doing away with all the vac lines exept the distributor vac line.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated!!!

Welcome to the club. Check through some of the posts and you'll get enough info on conversion kits and idle problems. Reading is your friend.

Trash in the needle valve can cause the float to stick and drown the carb. Pretty common in something that's been sitting a long time.

Yeah been doing some reading on here...seems like the hitachi's are junk anyway...going to go ahead and do the weber converstion...called a weber tech today to talk with him but he hasn't returned my call yet. I am completely dumb when it comes to this little truck. It was my dads before he got killed and I always just drove it around the farm....I plan on just driving it back and forth to work and pull a 12' trailer 2 or 3 days a week....Any other suggestions to the motor while I am under the hood?

Thanks Guys in advance!!!

Get E3 spark plugs, run some seafoam in it, check the cap and rotor. Change out the brake fluid, and clutch fluid. (if manual)Nice find, not to many single cab 4x4's out there.

A basic tune up should suffice, just like dogred said.

Ok i was out the other night looking for something in the back garage and just happened to give the datsun a once over....the vac line from the carb to the distributor was split about 4 inches ... what kind of symptoms would this cause?....i am going to drain the tank this weekend and hopefully get started on it next week!

Personally I'd replace all the vacuum lines, clean the fuel tank and lines, and try it again. I have two trucks with stock carbs and they run great - no complaints! I have a friend with the weber and his doesn't run any better. Any power increase in these little engines isn't worth pursuing IMHO. They make enough power and have good torque - just what a little truck needs.

wow, 20, 000? That's nothin man! you sure you did'nt forget a zero or something? as for that cracked vaccuum line, that should be your vaacum advance hose. It would generally sputter alot and run like crap when you let offf the gas etc. What a find. I bet you could get some good cash for that motor with only 20,000 if you wanted to sell it.

Replacing ALL of my vac lines helped my idle out greatly. Also, the float on my carb was stuck due to some grime but once it was cleaned off it ran much smoother. But from what I've heard/read, the Weber conversion is much better. Good luck and welcome!

If you do not have to deal with emission regulations delete all vac lines except the vac to the distributor. Replace this one
