hey guys well im a newbie and i recently purchased an altima and now it has about 4500 miles on it....anyways i was wondering is it bad for the engine if i rev it to about 4-5k rpm before letting up to change gears (i own a cvt 08 4door altima) i heard you are supposed to break it in hard so it drives hard but im very confused and don't want to mess up my engine...i know its not the best thing for my engine but is it very bad for the trans mostly or the engine....i just wanna know the consequences of my somewhat stupid actions :D thanks

welcome!

The breakin period on the car is from about 0 miles up to around 1000-1500 miles - if you have 4500 already your engine has most likely had it's first oil change and is broken in for the most part. Engine break in is subjective - some say do it hard, the book says do it soft....no one really knows / you can't really know...

good luck!

yes, it is not good for the engine if you constantly hit it to 4-5k rpm. You overwork the engine each and every time you do that. take it easy on the car if you plan to keep it a long time. like others said, there is no definite answer on how to break-in the engine. But with 4,500 miles, you're almost done with the break-in period. From what I read, 0-5k miles, you should take it easy. In the manual, it recommends to take it easy up to 1,500 miles. I always drive below 60 mph for the first 500 miles and not even 4k rpm until 2,000 miles. My car has close to 10k miles, and I've only paddle it down a few times.

i dont know...lately ive been taking it easy on the pedal but still i love to hear the engine roar and i love the feel of it.......i feel like the altima is built poorly though i have hear that the 08 altima breaks easily, like the parts on the outside arent so durable.....i know that this is probably b.s. but i just wanna see wat u guys think about itbtw thanks to everyone who posted :D

no problem, always glad to help. and about the altima breaking easy, I don't think that is completely true, but the Paint... now most people will tell you that it is not the best, chips fairly easy and scratches easy.

I've been reving hard lately because I like the way it sounds with the Intake, mufflers, and no resonator. Not the best thing for me to do since it eats up gas so fast.

WELCOME!LI STAND UP!I hope you arent neutral revving it and dropping it into drive...

Save gas man! If you want a loud sound better off getting an exhaust setup and taking it easier on the engine!

sweet.....in 4 stroke engines there is no performance boost as there is with 2 strokes by exhausts right? so wat would it only do make it sound nice lol?

It will make a difference. In theory the exhaust will have less restriction than the stock exhaust, which will mean the engine will not have to work as hard to push the exhaust out while the pistons move back upwards. This means that the engine is more efficient and can generate more power.

As far as breaking, my 07 hasn't "broken" yet, and the paint is actually holding up well.

Finally, you have a CVT - it never shifts or changes gears when you let up on it, it just changes the ratio between the transmission belts to be more efficient vs. more powerful. This will explain it: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/cvt2.htm
