I have a 91 n/a 2+2. My cataytic converters seem to be clogged so I was planning on replacing them with either hi-flow cats or just test pipes. My question is on the driver's side pipe just before the cat there is a pipe that comes out and runs up beind the fender well. Is this something that can be removed like part of the IAV system or something?

That would be your Air Induction Valve (AIV) system, only available on 90-92's. After that they deleted. Most people just get rid of the whole system along with EGR, carbon canister, etc. The point of the system is to inject fresh air into the exhaust before the cats so that they run cooler and more efficiently.

It's your choice if you want to delete it or keep it. If your state doesn't have emissions testing/inspection then you can get rid of it (and the cats and EGR systems too). You can either just cap the tubes and leave them or take the fenders off and get rid of everything. If you keep it though, you will need to get tubes welded into the midpipes/test pipes since most aftermarket ones don't come with them.

Here's a far better explanation of the AIV system and how to delete it:

Thank you for the help. Yeah I noticed that most aftermarket systems don't accomodate this. That is why I was asking. I was trying to figure out how to hook this up to the new pipes. I think I will just delete it all together.

Yeah most people end up doing that anyway. I kept my AIV's in place for now to help pass inspection, but when I do my turbo swap the eprom chip I got for the ECU won't have the system so I'll delete it then (since it won't be operational anyway).
