hello :) been driving for a year now, and my pop says i can get a dif car for my birthday, around 7-10k price range. I have been reading a bunch of crap for a while now, and had it down to mr2 vs 240sx, but my friend died in a wreck recently in an mr2, so mom wont allow that. Anyway, I want to buy a 3k$ 240sx and swap in a rb25det. the 240sx will most likley be an s13 fastback (based only on appearance, is there a reason s14 would be better?) and in my pricerange, it will probably be an automatic. i will deff. get a manual swap.to do this, i think i need - air compressor, impact wrench, sockets, ratchet, screwdriver, jack stands, engine hoist (friend has all the tools)rb25det driveshaft (400$)rb25det clip (3500$)

is there anything else that is necessary? i know there is reccomended stuff like replacing the clutch and stuff, but i mean like stuff that is needed to have the car run at least average; ex: if the engine will run with the stock fuel pump, but chugs along and dies frequently, i would consider that a necessary upgrade.

so all of that sounds good, here is the problem. my knowledge of cars is very limited since the car ive been driving for a year is a pos, and i couldnt really learn anything off it except like how to check the oil and ****. my knowledge is about 90% stuff off the internet 10% from friends, so my information has some pretty random gaps in it. i can explain how a turbo works and what vtec does, but i dont (embarassed) know stuff like "what does a clutch do?". I want to do as much of this as i can myself so i can learn about cars and how they work, plus i dont want to pay money to have a shop do it, but my dad dosent want me attempting an engine swap because it is pretty high level in terms of stuff you can do to a car. I am willing to work on it for multiple months and my friends dad said he would help, so dont worry about my patience level :).

SOOOOOwhat i am getting at, is does anyone have any information that they used while doing an engine swap? any kind of swap? pictures, walkthrough, the more the better. I need enough information to convince my dad that i at least know where to start. like what to disconnect first from the recipient car, what will bolt up directly, what needs modification, etc.

please assist your fellow rb motor 240sx enthusiast! :p

If i was you... i would by an AE86 (Corolla GT-S) and start tinkering with it. This is a very good chassis and very cheap to work with. Starting with an RB in a 240 is not something to do with limited knowledge of what is going on in the car. http://www.howstuffworks.com can help explain a lot of things on how a car works...

I'm not trying to be mean or anything... we all start somewhere, but swapping in with a motor that is not suppose to be in the car before you understand what's going on in any car might not be the best idea.

AE86s cost a lot for their age. GT-Ss, especially hatchbacks, demand prices like $6000 which is very high for a car that is as old as I am. Maybe finding a good 240 with a straight chassis and engine in good condition would be a better start. Learn about the car, and cars in general, while saving up. Don't do anything major to the car (well...my friends and I goof off with home depot parts...) until you figure out what you want to do, and how to go about it.

As for me, I'm glad my parents didn't ge tme a car when I first wanted one. It compelled me to research cars into what would be the correct choice. It's been five years since then (I still don't have a car) but like a rolling stone, I've gathered a TON of knowledge. If I'd gotten the first car I wanted, it would have been an old mercedes, a really old TL3.2 or a Civic...with a single center wiper...eww.

I agree with rbsileighty with his point on swapping the motor before knowing what's going on. There's a certain group of people who spend a lot of time and money swapping motors when they don't know jack about the car. I won't name the certain group. -__-;

heh, yes i thought about getting an initial d mobile, but i would tend to agree with AREITU in terms of price range.

AREITU - If i had gotten the first car i wanted, it wouldve been some kind of integra with a body kit :P

http://www.howstuffworks.com is good, anything else?

Library... look for back issues of magazines (Hot Rod explains a lot... and Sport Compact Car has some decent tech articles) and books on cars. I would also look into taking some mech courses at a tech college.

Check out your local library and read as much as you can find. For all the guys in Louisville, the main branch downtown has tons of books with good information (including Maximum Boost!!).A couple of guys on NICO have documneted their build up. Check out Meggala's page (sorry if that's spell wrong!) and NightXCZ page at 240skyline.nissanpower.com

Good luckJay

Books, but mostly hands on experiance will make you a more knowedgeable mechanic... Try hooking up with a friend working on his car, or maybe you know somebody who works at a shop and you could check out help/watching him work for free to get the knowedge you need...

I worked with my Grandpa (NCP Motors, Placerville CA) doing all kinds of engine rebuilds, motor swaps, restorations, fabrications, and custom cars... (Mostly all domestic) I work basicly for free, but the knowedge i've gained i won't be able to learn in any classroom.

Then of course i learned allot with my last car since i blew the engine 2 times, the driveline 2 times, and the transmission once... I just get more convident in my work each time, now i can pull a toyota supra engine in 2.5 hours, or a transmission in about 40 min from a 240sx... practice won't make u perfect, but a heck of a lot better.

You did say you still had a car, so maybe if you do deside to get a 240sx and swap an RB, the swap can be a learning process, take you time, learn everything you can, but mostly have fun!

(Wish my dad would have baught me a car... ever...)

I think I'm in the same boat as you, chmercer, I want to do the RB25 swap myself and so far my dad has been pretty helpful in find a rolling chassis and helping me plan out what I'll need. I'm kinda nervous about doing it, but next semester I'm gonna take auto tech from a nearby community college, it's a toyota T-Ten school, I dunno if that means anything or not, but hopefully if I can get my project planned and off the ground and I can learn about something I'd like to do and get a nice ride out of it in the meanwhile. :ylsuper

btw, go check out night's site, I learned a bunch from reading about his swap

I totally agree with hands on experience... but you won't break as many things as long as you know what you are looking at and/or have a mentor to help you with the work.

Hanging out at a local rod shop when I was in high school helped me out a lot...
