newbi question! What is the cam timing mark?

is it the pin on the cam or the hole on the gear? i had no spark and then i fixed that and it fires but wont start so i figured i timed it wrong,but i have no back fire, i have 248/248 cams i know the round about of timing it but this is my first 240

it is a 1995 ka24de

i set the crank at tdc ex cam at 10 oclock and in cam at 1 oclock off of the little hole on the gear which in my thinking that is wrong but i am used to neons and i could work on one of those blind folded
