i got a turbo off of a volvo today, with the header, intercooler, intercooler piping, oil cooler, most fo the stuff you need for it. if my car came out good with a compression test would it be worth it to put this turbo on my ka? i got all of this for free, that is why i am asking, i dont have money to buy an actual turbo kit, so if this might work out im gona run with it. i dont know much about turbos, so most of this probably sounds stupid. thanks for any input.

Pretty much only thing you'll have to buy is a manifold.Everything else you can get pretty cheap. If you're doing under 7lbs you won't need much to be boosted as long as you got someone with experience helping ya.

thanks for the info guys, i dont knwo the specs of the turbo, i just know it is off of a volvo. ill run a vin check on it wednesday and see what year etc. and get the info. i think i may have figured out how to adapt teh header to my car. in my metals class we have a plasma cutter, so i think if i get some KA flanges cut out, then i can space it and weld those to some cut out volvo flanges, then just bolt up the volvo header. will i need any kind of new fuel controll or ecu or anything for maybe 5-7 psi? i know probably a new fuel pump and maybe injectors, not sure about anything else.

do you know what year volvo it was? If it was a 740/940 built before '89, it should have a T3. 1989.5+ should be T28.

VIN: YV1FA874XJ2244835 Year: 1988 Make: Volvo Model: 740 Style/Body: 4 Door Sedan Engine: 2.3L I-4 EFI DOHC Tbo Country of Assembly: Sweden here si the info for the volvo, so i spose it is a t3. someoen todl me you can check a turbo by blowing compressed air through the intake side of it and if you hear it spool up or whatever it is good. by teh way, i did the compression test, came out 170, 170, 165, 170. so it si pretty good.

To check for turbo condition, try wiggling the compressor or turbine side side to side. There should be no play. Same for front to back. Check for burnt or coated oil on both sides, this could be a problem with the bearings and seals. Spin the turbo by hand, it should spin freely. There should be no bent, twisted, or cracked blades.

T3

Just a guess Quote » someoen todl me you can check a turbo by blowing compressed air through the intake side of it and if you hear it spool up or whatever it is good. [/quote]Not true.

That test will tell you nothing as far as what condition the barrings are in.

Shaft play is where its at......if you can wiggle the impeller and hear a clunking noise then its bad.....real bad.

Talk to someone that actually knows what they're doing with turbos and ask them to take a look at it. I don't mean the DSM kid down the street, I'm saying drop by a performance shop and start up a conversation about turbos and ask them what all you need to check out on it... they might even check it out for free and tell you.

Hell, you might find some cheap help in getting it on if you don't know what you're doing.

haha a clunking noise...

lucky you.. lots of free stuff. i have the same size turbo but i had to pay for it. it spools up so fast it's rediculous. it won't be good for a high horsepower setup but i know you're just bolting on some power (probably just like what my setup is right now) so you're in good shape with the parts you inhereted as long as they are in good shape.

you're going to want to get a blow off valve if you didn't get one for free... you're also going to have to make some custom piping for the whole system because chances are the stock volvo pipes are not going to fit very well.

other than that you'll need a rising rate fuel pressure regulator (rrfpr, aka fmu), and you may want to invest in a better intercooler, but i don't know what the one you have looks like... i just don't feel safe with a little dinky side mount, but i live in texas.

as above find out everything you need to get, or list everything you have and we will tell you what you lack...

and as structure said research this a lot... read a lot and find out as much as you can about everything and problems people have, etc... good luck
