I've got a big chunk of change lying around that I was going to put into getting some rims and tires or maybe some coilovers etc for my 240.. but i recently got into an accident and the front of my car is all scraped up so I decided not to go with anything cosmetic and maybe just look for more power. I thought of maybe just getting headers, cams, etc.

But a friend of mine suggested maybe building my own turbo kit for my KA24E... I know the motor is strong still, and has always been taken care of well.. and I did some searching around on these turbo forums but really didnt find the answers I was looking for..

For now, all Im looing for is to make very modest power, I see alot of guys on here pushing 300+ and Im not even interested in anything that high.. what im looking for is more along the lines of 220-230 or maybe even lower.. just because I want to keep my car fairly reliable and I dont want to be paying out the nose for gas

Im a pretty big newb when it comes to turbo's, but I have alot of mechanical know-how and have owned several 240's and done major engine work on them before so Im not afraid I wont be able to handle the installation/fabrications. All I need to know is what I need and where the best places to get parts from would be. I've heard buying used parts isnt a bad way to go, but I dont know which turbo to buy or what intercooler, wastegate, etc.

Im sorry for the long post and newb questions, please dont flame me! *hides*

My suggestion is to buy a book about turbocharging. Start there. Maximum Boost by Corky Bell is fairly easy to follow. Once you have a better knowledge of turbo systems, you can then be more specific as to what info to search or ask for.

just quickly you will need:

turboexhaust manifoldwastegatedownpipeexhaustintercooler pipingintercoolerblow off valvefuel managment (somehow)maybe injectors, maybe a fuel rail (depending on your fuel setup)fuel pumptiming managment (somehow)guagestime on a dyno or a widebandflanges, gasketsoil return and feed lines for the turboprobably a clutch and flywheel

and most likely some other things that I forgot. there are a lot of little things that are pretty expensive... you'd be suprised how it adds up. you can get a lot of the stuff used or off of other junked cars or something, but be aware that there are a LOT of necessary parts before you dive in.

building your own turbo kit is always better for further upgrade!

If I were you, I would set up your suspension first with a nice shock/spring combo or coilovers and then an lsd. Then, with the leftover money, I would start putting together a turbo kit.

That's what I did.

Also, Orange, check out my site. That's should get you started with the things you will need.

I have to disagree here. Building it yourself has little to do with upgradability. How you put to gether the kit is really where the ease of upgrading is decided. If you build a turbo system that leaves you enough room, and uses a turbo that uses the same mounts(flanges), then you are probably in a good position to be able to upgrade with little hassle. The NSport and XS kit can use any T4 on-center turbine housing and it will mate to the manifold and downpipe perfectly. Some slight modification may be needed on the compressor side, but this just depends on how big you are going. Some people use the Z31 T3 turbo which is not a direct swap to a typical T3, from what I've heard. In other words, the fact that you put it together yourself doesn't mean anything about future upgradability. And of course, upgrading the turbo is only one way to upgrade the entire system. But the same concepts apply to everything else.
