Newb help! 240sx purchasing suggestions

Whats up all,

I've been driving a handed down Honda Accord, and as much as I love this car its just too slow! I want to buy a 92ish fastback (?? hatchback right?). What I want is a fairly quick car in stock form... but also good potential for future speed upgrades. Also I want to get a car with good variety of body kits too.

I don't know anything about the generation of the car I want (I think its around 89-93???), but I do know about the SR20DET but thats not what I want to do right now. Is it reliable, hows the handling, performance parts readily available, etc. Any info is greatly appreciated (general or otherwise), user input is the best so thats why I came here. Thanks in advance!
