Hey guys I just bought a 1993 Z32 n/a t-top. The odometer says it has 37,000 miles but i don't know how accurate that is. I ended up getting the car fax and everything seems to be good. According to car fax. So my first question is, is there any way to find out exactly how many miles a car has. And my second question is, would it hurt if i put gasket sealer on the gasket for the transmission pan. Oh yeah the car is automatic. The reason that i want to use gasket sealer is because i kinda scratched some paint off the pan in the process of removing the gasket. I tried using the gasket remover spray but that dindnt help. Well maybe just a little. By the way im a little new to the car world, especially the Z world so if i say something dumb that might have something to do with it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to NICO and congrats on your cool new cruiser.

Is the transmission pan leaking? If so, get yourself some RTV and slather that stuff up in there to your hearts content until you're ready to drop the pan and tray again with a new gasket. Its not a great fix, but will work until you get a new gasket and some time on your hands.

You will also want to check out the link in my signature. As a member of NICO, we have Factory Service Manuals available to you for free. Click the link and find your year and model. It'll help you with any future repairs!

I would recommend applying the RTV to the pan and not the trans side of the gasket. When you assemble just snug the bolts then allow it to cure 20-30 minutes before torquing.

I was looking at the service manual and it said to torque the pan bolts to 4.5 foot/lbs does that seem right to you guys?

Yes, thats why stamped pans often leak, you over torque them and they distort and leak.

Hey guys just an update on how things went. I did put the gasket sealer on the pan side of the gasket and everything went good, no leaks. I also changed the motor oil and it seemed like it had not been changed since the car was first purchased. Little by little im gonna make this baby run right.

Good luck with the project man!
Good thing you checked that oil. Did it come out gloopy? If so, I'd suggest changing the oil again within 2,000 miles, and then put in one of those high detergent oils for another 1-2k and then put in your oil of choice. That should help break up the sludge and deposits.
