Yeah I've had it installed already. I was willing to sacrifice some defroster ability to get rid of that hellish tint. Didn't quite see that keyless issue coming, but wasn't to surprised because I read another guy had a similiar experience prior to my tint job. I just hoped my rear window damage would be minimal.Q451990 wrote:I believe there are defroster repair kits as well... did you already have the replacement tint installed? (if so, you probably can't repair it using that kit)

Hey man that's a sweet quick fix, but is it actually a possibility? Now when you say factory service manual, your not speaking of the owners manual are ya? I'd be surprised if that valuable info is in there.qship96 wrote:Easier and cheaper to re-engineer the current antenna- look in factory service manual and identify the proper connector that leads to the keyless remote system antenna and configure a replacement antenna- maybe something as simple as a piece of wire extended along the edge of rear deck to pick up signal from remote transmitter? This will take a few hours and very little cash to play around with to come up with a viable solution.
Many use razor blades to start the peeling. Depends how old the tint is. Sounds like his had been on there for a long time if there was damage to his defroster...jltibbs wrote:Did the installer use steam to remove the rear window tint?
Yeah, there shouldn't be damage to those lines!! I've had tint removed on my car with no damage. They messed up and sold that lie to you. I would demand that they pay the price for their screw up. It would be hard in your case since you left their location believing the lie they sold you...totaljett wrote: Yeah I've had it installed already. Most shops don't guarantee (in the fine print) no damage to the defroster lines - removal quality is contingent upon installation quality.NightRiderQ45 wrote:Yeah, there shouldn't be damage to those lines!! That is a sure sign one is in a messed up shop.frenetic wrote:

Exactly. That isn't normal at all but he doesn't have a leg to stand on at this point because he left the shop and believed the lie the shop sold him. I just had my 30% tint taken off two months ago(with no issues) and put 5% on.BadQ45t wrote:this wasn't normal, unless this shop is your high school buddy or something I'd go back and tell them they screwed up and get them to fix it for you.
No it's not legal, but the cops here don't care. That's why I snatched my tint off and put that on. Back home, I would have been pulled over as soon as I left the tint shop. I love the tint but I will see how well it actually works once it gets hot here this summer. Plus I have a nice Double Din cd/dvd player that I want to keep people from seeing.qship96 wrote:5% ???? Is that legal in your state???? If not, plan on getting a inspection order ticket requiring you to remove it- cops now carry light meters to measure tint level, and if you fail state standards.......
Yep steamed was used but claimed the previous type of installation and age of tint made it impossible for him to avoid any damage.jltibbs wrote:Did the installer use steam to remove the rear window tint?
Yeah my tint was purple as well and 2-4 feet is the keyless capability as well. Radio is fine though but I don't know capability of defroster yet. Prior to removing my tint he explained the possibility of this issue and even pointed out on my defroster where some lines were already broken. This was prior to removal and it makes since because I keyless always had dead spots before all of this. Nothing like my Lincoln Ls that worked through doors, million miles away and so on. The Q never had that strenght even after my new OEM keyless remote purchase, so some little damage always existed. It's just terrible now.tfvesquire wrote:Sorry to hear about your problem with the tint removal. I had the exact same problem removing the old crappy PURPLE tint on the rear window. I spent three weekends carefully removing the tint with a tint removal kit (didn't work) hairdryer (barely worked) 3M adhesive removal spray (at $25.00 per can) and then razor blade and small straight edge carefully cutting the tint along each line and carefully removing the material in between each line. I even left the tint on the defroster and keyless lines instead of trying to carefully peel them off. I still had no defroster, limited range on the keyless antennae (2-4 feet)and limited radio reception (FYI: there is also an FM antennae line in the rear window). At least you still have your defroster working.
I ended up having to find a good replacement rear glass at the junkyard and replaced the entire rear window so I could finally see out the back window on rainy/snowing nights, use my keyless as I was walking up to the car and get all my FM reception back.
I wish I could tell you there was a quick fix, but unless they are able to carefully remove just the tint that covers your keyless antennae (see the FSM) and fix it with a grid line repair kit, you may be SOL unless you go aftermarket alarm.
Good luck with all that. After the first weekend I wanted to track down the prior owner and beat the sh*t out of them for putting that cheap crap on the window.
I feel your pain.
Ted
I don't get it; so you already knew that damages could make it worst, why complain now since they told you this prior to the install? I take back my previous statement that I made against the installer.totaljett wrote: Yeah my tint was purple as well and 2-4 feet is the keyless capability as well. Well, I never had a complaint towards the installer. Just pointing out why I'm in need of an aftermarket keyless system. The unfortunate circumstances were explained in case someone knew of a magical alternative other than purchasing a keyless system.NightRiderQ45 wrote:I don't get it; so you already knew that damages could make it worst, why complain now since they told you this prior to the install? Gotcha.totaljett wrote:Well, I never had a complaint towards the installer. Just pointing out why I'm in need of an aftermarket keyless system. The unfortunate circumstances were explained in case someone knew of a magical alternative other than purchasing a keyless system.
