OEM piepans are +45 I believe so should the safe zone be +35 and up?

Offsets can't really be compared "straight across" on wheels of different widths.

Hopefully this will help some.

Yep. The backspacing of the wheel is taken from the back of the rim, which includes the inboard bead seat and flange (lip) to the wheel mounting pad. The wheel width is determined from the inboard to the outboard bead seat, so measuring across the outside lips the wheel could actually be up to a half of an inch wider than its designated width. Depending on a wheels flange size (anywhere from 3/16 of an inch +), the backspacing and offset of wheels the same width can vary slightly.

It has been mostly all said, but here is my opinion too, fwiw:

1. I strongly believe that 18" is the maximum diameter than looks good on a first-gen Q45. So, go for the current gen Q45 18 x 8.0 wheel with a 245/45-18 tire. My vote is for that one!

Another option is the 2003/4 M45 18x7.5, that would also take a 245/45-18 tire. This is stock on my current 2003 M45, of course - I use it with the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tire, 100W load index, with excellent results!

2. The G35 and Z wheels at 30 and 33mm will work, without rolling (although close!) as long as you use an 18" rim with a maximum 8.0 width. If you go for 19" rims, or your car is lowered, you will most likely need to roll the fender to avoid contact. The tire profiles at 19" simply do not allow much room at all!

These are comments based on my experience with G35 17" wheels on my 1995 Q45 (pictures are in the photo area) and I always felt that it was a close fit to the fender - with a changed profile tire (like on a 19" rim), I would have had contact with the fender (no lowering on my car!) Just remember NOT to rotate tires front to back!

3. The new M Sport wheels are very, very nice, but the offset simply does not work cleanly without spacers - I think you would need spacers both front and back (although somebody here has said that he did not use them in the back - I am surprised by that!) Yes, I know that some people here have no problems with spacers, but I truly think they are dangerous and evil and can cause problems! Sorry to be a disbeliever.

Grant at TireRack also said the same in the Wheels and Tires forum and recommended that getting the right wheel and offset is way better than using spacers.

Regards,

Z

Damn close. Really need to be +35mm - +40mm offset for 18" wheels in 8.5" - 9" width range.

I agree - those are better fits!

But, if he does use 30 or 33 with a 19" wheel, I suspect he might need some fender rolling to avoid contact - particularly given the tire profiles for 19" tires. I know that with my 17" rims on my Q45, I came close to the fender (pictures in the photo section) using 245/45-17 tires.

BTW, many generalized charts from aftermarket wheel/tire distributors and others often dispense some misinformation.

Lets examine the listing for the 1990-2005 Q45.

It lists the OEM offset as +45mm and yes that is correct but partial data. Other OEM Q45 wheels within the 90-05 model year range also have offsets of +30mm, +35mm, and +40mm.

On the point of G35 wheels on G50 Q's, I've seen a few around town with the bent six spokes, and they look great. In fact, there's a white one in my new condo complex with them, but I haven't met the owner yet. The G35's offset works perfect on the G50, nice and flush, factory look. I like it.

At least three different offsets for G35 wheels depending on size that I know of (+30mm, +33mm and + 45mm).

I love the 7-spoke 18 x 8's on Crimson's and the slightly staggered 18 x 8 and 18 x 8.5 350Z Tracks on Elwesso's.

In a 30mm and 33mm offset, and a 17x7.5 size, they work pretty well on a G50, with only a little closeness to the fender - I would have preferred 35 or 38mm for a better fit. I have pictures on them on my now-sold 1995 Q45:

Running on Falken Ziex 512 in a 245/45-17 size in these pictures.

There's more than a just little misinformation in the above chart.

I used the Q45 as an example being this is the Q forum, but a few more wrongs that have jumped out at me are

G35 Coupe +45mm (wrong)I saw a G35 Coupe with some chromed 17x7 G35 Sedan Sport Suspension Package 5-spoke wheels on it at the local dealership a couple of years ago. They fit but were noticeably tucked further away from the fender openings (especially in the rear) as the correct coupe wheels would have been. I told the sales manager about it and he said it was temporary while they were having the coupe wheels chromed.

2006 M35/45 +45mm (wrong)Szhosain states that the 18x8 M35/45 have an offset of +47mm, the 19x8.5 an offset of +50.

Heres a few more that I quickly looked up

2003-2005 350Z +35mm (wrong)The 350Z wheels are similar to the G35 Coupe wheels in offset. 17x7.5 front +30, 17x8 rear + 3318x8 +30mm front and rear, 18x8.5 (Track) rear +33

Altima/Altima SE/Altima SE-R 2002-200516x6.5 +40mm, 17x7 +45, 18x8 +45

Always be wary of any generic chart

I can verify that the 350z touring wheels (18x8 at 30mm offset) are really not optimal with a 245/45/18 with a wide section width.

I got some BFG KDWs yesterday and they are significantly fatter than the stock Bridgestone RE040s (which SUCK, btw). They rub hardcore when I go over a good bump in the rear.

Optimal would seem to be around 35mm with this size of wheel and tire section width.

Agreed. +35mm - +40mm a better range for that tire and wheel combination.

The 2003/4 M45 wheels at 18 x 7.5 with 35mm offset are a good fit for G50 Q45's. The 2006 M45 wheels (whether the 18" standard or the 19" Sport) are not a good fit ... without using spacers, that is!

The 2003/4 M45 wheel is a teensy bit narrower than I would prefer (an 8.0" would have been much better,) but it can take a 245/45-18 tire and this will give you all the fitment, looks and handling you really need!

Another option is the 200X Q45 Premium wheel at 18 x 8.0 with 35mm offset. This easily takes a 245/45-18 tire without any problems. Optimal width for proper tread and section width with almost every 245/45-18 tire and works very well! Similar to what Brian (maxnix) said, an offset of 38mm would be ideal, but the 35mm works pretty well too.

Anything much wider, or larger in diameter and width, or different in offset is simply asking for trouble and some expense to get it right (with fender rolling, spacers, and the like) And it does not look good (IMHO, of course ) either!

Yes! the 2003/4 M45 wheel offset mentioned in that chart is incorrect too! The stock wheel is a 18x7.5 with 35mm offset.

Thinking about the new wheels again, now that I've had some time to recover from the last $1000 I had to spend on the alternator job. So...

How can a person tell whether a Q45 has the 18x7.5" or 18x8.0" wheel when looking at the wheels? I was looking at one in the showroom of an Infiniti dealer 2 days ago and I can't tell what it has. Do they both have the same tire size? The one I saw had 245 45 R18 tires.

How bad is it really to use spacers? If my piepans are +45mm and assuming the M35 wheels are +47mm, how hard would it be to make these wheels fit without problems ( a difference of +2mm), since going down to a +35mm is ok?

Cheap spacers are bad, good spacers are fine, but would cost as much (eat up any savings) as getting the right wheels.

You can't compare the offset of the stock wheel 6" wide, with the M35's 8" wide wheel with a 47mm offset.

Give us some ideas of the wheels you want (size - dia & width, look - spoke, solid, mesh and your budget) then we can offer you some examples of what will fit.

Keep in mind, both Wes and I are "possibly" selling our 18" Rays.

Do you know anyone who makes quality spacers? What wheels are you and Wes upgrading to?
