sup everybody...new to the club.Anyways, installed unorthodox crank pulley and apparently im getting timing issues. Cam lobes are starting to get scratched up and hearing a valve tick. Im guessing i skipped a tooth when trying to torque it tight. Anybody know what the timing is supposed to be set at for s13 redtop sr20det?? and how to do it? (im guessing you have to advance or retard the crank angle sensor?). Also for the people who have installed crank pulley, is there supposed to be some sort of key that fits in the slot of the crank pulley and crank shaft snout because i didnt see any. does it matter if the key is not in there?? i tried to center the two slots togther as best i could.any suggestions would be apprecaited. Thanks.

thx vutony for that sight. yeah yeah i know, didnt think such a simple upgrade could do so much. got another question.. if i happened to skip one or two teeth(god forbid), would tdc be much harder to find? let me inform you that i didnt know i was supposed to have a key for the crank snout and crank pulley (you know were i can buy one??), but i did line up the slits as best as i could, so the needle and lines on crank pulley might be off. is there easy way to figure out were tdc is??

found the key.. it was sitting behind the oil seal. so when i started the motor, the key juss shredded the inside of the oil pump circle. took a chunk out. Now i need a new oil pump cuz theres no pressure and thats why i know why my oil squirters arent squirting. This all sucks but at least i figured it out. Anybody got a spare oil pump for cheap ??(s13 redtop)

wow that really sucks...

Yeah keeping that half moon key in the crank while you put the pulley is a PITA but must be done.

Sorry to hear that you shredded your oil pump. Thats another PITA to fix.

SL87, you may wanna consider pulling the motor to do the oil pump. It requires the removal of the front timing cover, which in turn requires the upper oil pan to be removed. Doing that in the car, you would need to suspend the motor and remove the front crossmember.

As far as the cams go, be careful. Depending on how bad they were scored, they may need to be replaced. Also, you should consider checking the journal and rod bearings for any spinning. That valve tick you heard may in fact be a shot rod bearing.

I remember a guy in the area who's SR oil pump had been machined (don't know why the shop did it) and the car built enough pressure to keep the dummy light from coming on, but not enough for the car to run properly. He ended up spinning a main bearing when it was all said and done.

Just trying to tell you not to half *** this one, you should really check the whole motor to make sure something wasn't totally effed up.

When I had rod knock #1 and rod knock #2.. Both sounded like my valve train was making a rattling noise.
