SL87, you may wanna consider pulling the motor to do the oil pump. It requires the removal of the front timing cover, which in turn requires the upper oil pan to be removed. Doing that in the car, you would need to suspend the motor and remove the front crossmember.
As far as the cams go, be careful. Depending on how bad they were scored, they may need to be replaced. Also, you should consider checking the journal and rod bearings for any spinning. That valve tick you heard may in fact be a shot rod bearing.
I remember a guy in the area who's SR oil pump had been machined (don't know why the shop did it) and the car built enough pressure to keep the dummy light from coming on, but not enough for the car to run properly. He ended up spinning a main bearing when it was all said and done.
Just trying to tell you not to half *** this one, you should really check the whole motor to make sure something wasn't totally effed up.
