I have purchased new TPMS sensors for my new after market wheels. Is the dealership the only place that can sync them to my car?

No, don't believe that. Sears can do it too and others.

An independent tire dealer did my generic replacements late last year. However, I'm not sure the tire shops have anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure they auto-calibrate when over 25 mph for over 10 minutes straight (or whatever the manual says, it does say). Some people swear that doesn't work, but it definitely always has for me. If that doesn't work for you, I don't imagine anyone without a consult can fix it.

The 00Dustin, you are dead right. I bought new ones, installed them and after a day they were fine and reporting properly.

I bought brand new tmps and put them on my 20s about a month ago, still having the lights on my dash. I will have to take them somewhere to caliberate them.

When I bought mine I was asked to provide my VIN so that at the time of shipping them, they calibrated them for me, from there it was plug and play. I think they have to set the proper radio frequency so that our systems can pick them up.

So it was not as if the sensors auto-calibrated then. Let me share my recent experience.
When in October 2012 I got my M45 Sport I fixed new oem rims and new tires. I then noticed that the TPMS malfunction indicator would come on after about 14 miles on the freeway and the ** would appear on the info display. I went through the ESM and it was clear that nothing was wrong with my system that all I needed was a reset tool. But after reading on here I discerned that an alternative was to match the sensors, which would have been dislocated when the new rims were fixed, to their original positions. So this last Sunday I took out time to cross rotate (revolve) my tires, and after about two hours had succeeded in matching the sensors to read the tire pressures. On each occasion that a sensor was correctly positioned it took less than 5 minutes drive of between 30-40mph before the tire pressure was displayed. Since then the display always came on only after about 200-300 yards of driving. The front right however takes a much long ride, and I'm considering trying again the sensor on the extra tire for that position.

I cannot speak to the fact that tires need to properly positioned in terms of the where the tires are on the car. I have had many tire rotations and have never noticed that the shop(infiniti) ever re set the sensors due to the new tire positions.
Before I replaced the sensors, I had only one wheel that was coming up as **, so that tells me that the system reads the sensor not matter which position it sits on the car. The warning told me it was the right rear; during the rotation this tire was placed on the drivers front, about 20 min later the ** showed up on the drivers front.
I am not an expert- the transmitters are in the wheels and the receivers are in the wheel wells, so the receivers will pick up the transmitter – when the system is armed and in read mode. So while the tires may not show the correct position on your display they will warn you of a low pressure condition; the issue is you will need to check all four tires. My issue and warning light was a function of a dead battery, the life span of the battery is about 4.5 to 5 years, one of mine was dead and I had to replace all four.

Found this on another forum:

Directly from the M45 Service Manual, "Immediately after a spare tire is mounted, a wheel is replaced or tire rotation is performed, tire pressure will not be indicated on the display and low tire pressure warning will not function. Reset the system by driving the vehicle at over 25MPH for approximately 10 minutes" (4-9)

However, whenever I rotate the tires, the TPMS never works and the dealer has to reset it but free of charge because I read them the above text. It is not my fault that the TPMS does not reset, why should I pay for it.

"Whenever I rotate the tires, the TPMS never works and the dealer has to reset it." That's the crux of the point Merling2. If one was ready to undergo the laborious task of rotating the tires and not the wheels, there'd be no need to reset the sensors. Or, put in another way, whatever you do ensure that the sensors remain in their original locale :)

His sensors are in a different position every time, and they auto-detect after he does what the manual says. Mine works the same way. We both got new sensors that match the frequency the car uses, and they auto-detect after we do what the manual says. Expecting a sensor that doesn't support the right signal to "calibrate" doesn't make sense anymore than trying to put a 2 inch square peg in a 1 inch round hole. Some M's in this generation allegedly don't auto-detect after being moved. If yours is one of them, only a technician with a consult tool will be able to fix it after rotations. However, moving the TPMS sensors every time is a fine workaround if you want to put forth the effort and risk damaging them every time. Note that maintaining a speed above 25mph for 10 minutes straight is easier said than done on most roads. I used to have a long drive where I could do this if no one ahead of me needed to make a left turn, but the last two times mine auto-detected, I got lucky and hit 4 green lights (or managed to slow down early enough to stay above 25mph until they turned green but not so early to miss the green) on a much shorter drive (if any one of those lights turned red at the wrong time or for too long, I wouldn't have been going 25mph any more and the 10 minutes would have started over).
