first off I wanna introduce myself. My names cliff and im from south Carolina. I originally joined this site a year or so ago when I purchased my first Nissan in the form of a 1990 2+2 300zx. ive since worked on the car off and on but still have along road to go with it. I ended up having to create a new account as my comp didn't remember my password and I couldn't remember it or my user name. but anyway this leads us to my new project.

Soo i've recently picked up a 1986 Nissan pickup. the truck belonged to my dad and was used more or less as a farm/hunting truck. ive been doing a bit of research on it so from what I can gather it is a pre 1986.5 as it still has the dual headlights. From what I can tell this model of truck is known as the 720 correct? also is this truck a Datsun or a Nissan. im aware of the Datsun name just being a Nissan label but dunno the technical name of the truck.

wheels are huge on it lol. fun lil truck in the mud thou

As of a week ago I put fuel in it, pumped up the tires, and jumped it off. had an issue with it staying running as my dad said it had that issue when I met the weeds it lived in alil over a year ago. truck runs ok but you have to keep the engine running with the throttle. he said its an issue with the carb so this is where the confusing part comes it. never messed with a carb as everything ive ever tinkered on has been fuel injected. but hey figured it wouldn't be an issue. (I own a 90 z32 that ive done a good bit of work on) well I pulled the carb and it is dirty as all get out and could prolly use a rebuild. prices on a reman carb arnt bad so I figured id weigh my options on rebuilding vs reman

as the carb looks after pulling.

but then I started noticing some weird stuff.

Image

like the hack job on the carb harness. upon closer look the carb didn't have the orginal harness but instead looks like a fuel injected harness.

id gone to my local pick and pull and photographed and checked out several carb z24s as well as the newer z24i(think that's correct) as they were from what I can gather fuel injected. now the plug that is on my carb looks very similar to the plug from the fuel injected model truck I saw in the junkyard. it has a rectangle look with curved corners as oppose to the circle plug of carb model.

it was then that I started getting confused.

my truck has the fuel injected harness plug as well as plugs not being used. it also has what looks to be a tps sensor that is plugged up but not bolted to anything.

Image

so from what I can gather maybe the truck was once a fuel injected truck and was converted to carb? if so what is my best option as of now? go back carb or try to go fuel injected

if they did the swap I think that they put a carb intake mani on it as it looks similar to the ones ive seen online as compared to the fuel injected manifold.

Image

really I dunno and could use to insight. I wanna get it to run, stay running, and do a good tune up on it. I plan to pressure wash the engine bay as soon it warms up. also is it true that there was only 200 z24 fuel injected trucks produced pre 1986.5

Hey, just spotted this thread. First and foremost, the _month_ and year of manufacture should be listed on the metal label that should be riveted in the driver door jamb. What is the month of manufacture?

Your intake manifold looks really unfamiliar to me, but that might just be model-year variation. That said, I've never seen the style of connector you took a picture of. As far as I'm aware, all 720s have the round connector.

That said, I don't know too much about about the D21 intake setup (I have an '85 720 from california -- 6-wire round harness). You might try asking on the D21 forum to see if they have any bright ideas. In case it helps with googling stuff, the D21 is also called the "hardbody."
