New to the CVT Transmission

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

Hello All,
I just bought a 2013 Nissan Sentra SV. I'm new to the CVT Transmission and am trying to learn what is normal and what isn't. So, could someone help me out here?

1) If I accelerate at 2000 RPM, everything is fine until about 40 mph. At that point the engine seems to whine and the Tach quickly spikes up about 500 RPM and immediately drops below 2000 (to about 1800).

2) Also, when braking, the RPM drops to around 800-900, but when my speed reaches ~15 mph, it spikes up to 1200 and immediately settles back down.

I realize the CVT transmission is something different and requires getting used to, but I am just wondering if these two incidents are normal, or if I should have the dealership check out my transmission for any issues.

Here is a YouTube video of the 1st scenario. You can hear the engine whine/rev at around 14 seconds.

This is normal for this transmission. It's a new generation CVT with a 2 speed planetary gear set, the changes you feel at 40mph is the planetary changing from 1st to 2nd. As for the your second question it's the planetary changes from 2nd to 1st. All normal operation.

Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to be sure I didn't need to go back to the dealership and have it looked at.
