Hey all. Just joined the club and i have to say you guys have a helluva forum for the KA-T. My 12v has about 140k on it and last month it spun a rod bearing and has been out of comission ever since. I'd been thinking about an engine swap, but after seeing some of the righteous power guys like ADAMHU are making i think i'll keep my little KA24E. I'm gonna rebuild the motor but i need to know just one thing: How durable are the rods on the stock motor? I know the DE has forged rods but what about the E? When i'm done i'm not looking to make alot of power, 260-280whp is fine with me. Just call me a realist.:pface Can the stock rods hold this kind of punishment without bending etc. if they are shot-peened, or should i get a set from crower?

Thanks for any thoughts/flames/opinions

Sam;)

They have the same rods, and I dont think I would trust them past about 10-12 psi. Just my 2c

If you are going to keep the stock rods, i would suggest you use new rod bolts, shootpeen and polish the rods. I have a twin cam and have never worked on the singles, so i do not feel qualified to give you an answer. I have heard that on the single cams and s13 twin cams they used better parts, and on the s14 twin cams they used lesser quality parts, that seems to be true to me. I have heard of a lot of rods being broken on deaclereration or use of engine braking on s14s. just my 2 cents.

Well i've got to tear the engine down anyways, so i might as well do it right the first time and upgrade the rods. No sense in using stock, braking them, and then having to take the motor apart again.:)

I can't wait to build a stock KA when I get back and push it to 350+ hp.....No detonation = no bent rods or blown pistons.

Yeah, after awhile you just learn to ignore him ;)

If your going to go with aftermarket rods and pistons, be prepared to pay about 1500 for them combined, they arent cheap.

yep. $700 for pauter rods, $500 for Ross pistons = $1200 + s/h so it adds up to quite a bit. But you could always go with cheaper rods and save about $150 I think.

Too bad I don't have the money to buy the rods yet, I guess I'm gonna have to see how much the stock rods can take.

Thanks for all the input fellas. I can see WDRacing's point though. Since i'm not really looking for more than 300hp i think i'll stick with new stock rods and some lower compression ratio pistons and just make sure i don't have any pre-ignition.
