Hey guys! I am a newbie, I just purchased my first standard car today! Got a good deal on this 240sx so why not!

So heres the low-down on the car:

1989 240SX with a 2.4L Single Cam Engine with about 270,xxxKM Body is pretty nice with a gun metal paint!

5Spd transmission, clutch is about 75% (what I been told) I am learning standard as well, if there any tips, please help me out!

So now that we know about the car, I got some issues immediately.

There is a rough idle issue, me and my friend suspect there is a missfire as it doesn't sound too nice
There is a "marbles in the can" sound, what can this be, and what can I do about it?
Serp. Belt squeaks! Upon start up of the car.
Minor rust, but I want to get rid of it ASAP, any advice ?

Also, I'd like to ask, what mods I should start first, or anything I should do immediately. I appreciate all the help!!!! Thanks everyone, nice to meet you all.

I am not sure how someone can tell you a clutch is 75%... That's an odd statement. The only way to actually know that is to measure the pad thickness on the discs upon install, and remove the clutch and remeasure to compare the thickness to check how much it has worn. That's a lot of work.

Rough idle could be a million things. Upon purchasing a car it is always a good idea to give it a tune up. Get new spark plugs and wires, dizzy cap and rotor. Check if car still runs rough. You could have a bad fuel injector. Pull the plug wires one at a time to see if it affects the idle. If you disconnect one and the car runs the same, something is wrong in that cylinder. If the plug is wet, the injector might be stuck open. On the other hand, it could be shut dead. You can always move the injector to a different cylinder and see if the problem moves. This system does suck because its hard to pull injectors out of the rail without breaking them. Be careful. These are just a few things that could be wrong.

The "marbles in a can" sound is super common on these cars. There is a timing chain guard that is right under the valve cover and those things break and hit the timing chain. It happened with my old car and I just pulled off my valve cover and threw the stupid guard away. Can was great after that. My new S13 does this as well, and I did the same and it didn't fix the issue. This now has me concerned because I wonder if it's the timing chain idler bolt that stripped out of the AL head. Another common things in these cars. It's worth note that these are problems on a DOHC, but I assume a SOHC isn't much different.

Belt squeaks? Which one? S13's don't have one belt, we have many. Check which belt is making the noise. Make sure you're not low on PS fluid. Check to make sure the belts are tight. Check to see if any pulleys wobble.

Rust? You're f***. The only full proof way is to cut out the oxidized metal and weld in new stuff.

First mods? Fix broken crap. Once car is in tip top shape, you are always better off doing suspension. Any "power" mods you do wont give you power that you will notice unless it's a turbo or a motor swap. With your miles you would most likely need your motor redone. Get coilovers and wheels. Slowly buy more suspension parts until you are happy. Oh, and stock S13 seats suck, get something better.

Best modding advice I can give you, don't cheap out. It is far better to wait longer for a part you can't afford, then to buy cheap crap and have it now. It will be a s*** part, and will cost you more in the long run.
