Well, I did it... I bought a 92 240sx convertible today. Now I'm just sorting through the MVA and insurance stuff to get it tagged and drive it home. The only thing I know is that this convertible is considered a pretty rare find. I'm working on pictures but for now I'll just tell you what found out.Body needs a little bit of work, paint seems pretty good overall.oil pan leaking and there is oil in the engine bay which appears to just be blow-by from the pan and fan. It shifts in to 2nd hard and then into 3rd at 3000 rpm. Headlights don't come up automatically, but they close automatically. 80,000 miles. No rust. Needs new tires but the wear seems even. Rear window could use a replacement but the top doesn't leak. Does anybody have any thing I should be looking for as problem areas? I am very new and this is my first Nissan as well.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

since you gotta do some engine work, you should really take off the timing chain guards. at least the upper one. they were recalls awhile back because they break off and can get into the chain and gears down in there. there's also a lower one that takes a little more work to get to. but the upper one is real easy, just take off the valve cover, and there it sits bolted on in the front. or in my case, resting on top of the chain making all sorts of terrible noise. when it took it out, my car you can't hear it runnin. ill get to the lower one later. the only other thing is that you shouldn't leave your top down overnight or for real long periods of time. this is because it can shrink because there's no tension on it. then when you go to put it up it can possibly rip some stitching. this is especially true for older tops, as it happened to me and im taking my car in monday to have someone restitch the whole thing. and this goes for every soft top convertible not just the 240's. can't think of anything else....use the search button as well for how to' s the chain guard thing you will find there, and pretty much whatever else. and also don't forget to register your car in one of the stickies on the 240 vert forum. later and enjoy your car.

Welcome!! Post some pics of your car sometime How much did you get it for? It come with a boot? How are the door panels?

And I think I have a solution for your pop-up headlights. When the press the button on the left side to make them go up, do they? Or do they only go up when you turn the lights on? Try turning the lights on, pressing in the pop-up button, then turn the lights off and see if they stay.

Are the timing chain covers something that needs new parts or just a complete removal?I learned about the convertible shrinking on my mom's old 74 Triumph TR6. I used to drive it to school and leave the top down all day.... Big mistake. My dad wasn't happy when he had to replace it.

Are there any places recommended for buying parts for these cars? I'm looking to get an oil pan and gasket set, light motors, and maybe one tail light. Also there is a possibility of buying another auto trans to rebuild here as a back up.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm sure I'll be bugging people with age old questions on this car as I get further into it. I'm working on the pics, I just have to shrink the file size down first.

Junkyards and forum classifieds for used stuff. I buy nearly all of my new/rebuilt stuff from rockauto.com.

the timing chain guards, just take em off no new parts are necessary. it was a voluntary recall, not mandatory. it should have been mandatory.

Because I am new to all this, what do you mean by common parts? I know I need a new oil pan, but can't find one.... I did get a deal on this car from what I can tell, but I'm sure I'll be doing some work to it for it to pass inspection and be sure it is reliable transportation.

this is what i think he meant. the 240's are pretty common i see them all the time anyway, especially the hatch. the coupe is a little less common on the road, but i rarely see a vert. and they all use pretty much the same parts. so therefor...the verts can use common parts from other hardtop 240's.

Hi there!

I am a new Nissan enthusiast too! I just bought a black 1993 Nissan 240SX convertible that I am restoring. I replaced the roof and taken it in for body work and a paint job...it looks fabulous!

I intend to get the upholstry replaced with vinyl eventually. Thing is I am located in BC Canada and am having difficulty finding what I need since the vert wasn't sold out here.

The hardest part to find for me is the boot cover so I am trying here to see if I can find one (black preferred). I would pay for shipping if the cost of the cover was reasonable.

I would love to hear from anyone who has one to sell OR if anyone knows or has heard of having one custom made and what they paid for that.

my email is [email protected] Will post pics when I get a chance!

Hi and Welcome to both of you new people!!!!

Welcome to the club! Great to have you.

I'd love to see some pics of your new convertibles!

Cindy,I hate to break it to you.. but you are going to have a very hard time finding a boot. They are out of production and in very high demand. Recently one that was in good condition sold for $350 US on Ebay. But.. keep your eyes on the forum, craiglist, ebay, etc... and you might just get lucky.

In fact.. there is a thread from today with a guy from AZ who has a boot for sale.. contact him..

Anyhow... welcome to the club. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.. And.. .if you get a chance... we'd love to see pictures. Also.. please sign up your car and VIN# in the 'vert registry!

Just wondering since it was a recall would nissan still honor it and take them off for me for free or would they tell me the time table for the recall is over and I just need to take them off myself???
