hey guys, thanks in advance for any help. i searched on this one and have an unheard of issue, although i gathered great info and think it maybe a hybrid/combo problem. you tell me what you think.

i have a 1996 g20 auto. i recently got the p/s pump replaced (and now im thinking i didnt need to, oh well), due to SEIZURE of my p/s. literally, the steering wheel would lock and jump, making a deafening screeching noise. after having the p/s pump replaced it stopped for a short while (but i would still get those small squeaks at either end of a full steering wheel turn).

the seizure and jumping is back. even if i am driving i can turn anywhere past a lane change without hearing this aweful screech.

heres what i think. after looking at the pulleys, it seems they are the culprit of seizure. after reading and searching it seems the bearings on idler pulleys go bad and this car is 10 yrs old and i assume its never been changed (i bought i used). thats one issue.

i also recently did my own backyard-p/s flush and may have gotten air into the system. so i will probably get a proffesional p/s flush.

heres the big Q. is this a surefire sign of anything huge going extremely wrong. like my rack or something. again my steering is literally locking/seizing to turn even while driving.

My first question would be, what did you flush the P/S with? What did you fill with?

Definitely worth looking at the bearings as well though.

the only things i have done are replaced P/s pump and flushed system. which is why i suggested it may be the idler pulley like i read somewhere else. but my question was, could it really seize as bad as i mentioned it was and is doing.

you don't really need a flush for air in the system...just bleed it

fill resorvior to about the cold max line and start the car...turn the wheel all the way to the left and hold for about 5 seconds...then turn it all the way to the right and hold for about 5 seconds. repeat a couple times to get all the air out.

I agree with this.

Just take your idler out, they can seize big time and its usually bad news.. you can probably easily tell by looking at the belt..... Take theidler out and spin it (hold it with 2 fingers where the bolt goes through) and see if its smooth... it should spin nicely and continue spinng a little without any rough spots.. its not perfectly smooth, replace the bearing. You can take the idler to NAPA and they can replace the bearing... Unfortunately theyre the only chain i know of that carries the bearings in stock, because otherwise id never recommend you to NAPA.

thanks, thats good advice. and just to make sure i know which pulley is the idler. isnt it the one -when standing next to the passenger side wheel over looking the engine- just to the right of the p/s pulley?? just want to check on this. thanks.
