Hi,

I've been secretly reading the NICO forums for awhile now and finally have reason enough to post. I recently picked up a 1992 240 white coupe (base, 5 spd, all stock, 78k miles), and the previous owner wouldn't seal the deal without throwing in an LSD he never installed. It seems to be void of any identifying marks (at least to my naked eye), and I have no idea what it came from or how difficult it would be to install. The previous owner seemed to be in the same boat. I read through the FAQs on the LSD and did a search but not being able to identify my LSD is a problem.

I figure the first step is to show you what it looks like, so I took the liberty of uploading some pictures.

The Japanese newspaper is somehow reassuring.

So what do we have here?

I'm going to throw out a guess; it looks a lot like the factory viscous unit I have sitting around waiting to be installed. Mine is still in it's case, though, so I'm not sure.

I'll get up some pictures of the coupe when I get it back from the mechanic. I just wanted him to look over it and fix the A/C (it's too hot in TX). I suspect it's just a leak because it was acting like the dual pressure switch was triggered (no indicator light, no RPM changes, no obvious signs of electrical failures). The only other problem with it is that one of the headlights closes exactly 8 seconds after the other one. I consider this a feature though, as I can easily wink the headlights (one thing those silvias could never do).

Not to deviate too much, I think you're right about the LSD. Most of the aftermarket LSD's are 1) clutch type and 2) don't include the half-shafts. The latter I assume is true because they are designed to work with the factory half-shafts (open diff). I don't see any ABS rings on the diff output, so the only other likely option would be the 300ZX, which is fine as long as it fits in my case.

Any other opinions?

Here's the coupe.

I found a few write-ups describing how to install a complete pumpkin. I talked to my mechanic, and he said that it would be much more difficult to install the LSD in the existing case. Has anyone attempted this?
