Post

New to this forum due to getting my new truck but my name is Rob and i got a 2wd datsun pickup with what i thought was 192k miles but noticed that only the 1/10th miles is turning on the odometer  . I got it for 500 bucks. it idles really rough and he said the carb is running rich i was wondering where should i start? i tried to adjust the idle speed and mixture screws and i think its idling a little better but the exaust still smells like gas bad. Do i need to rebuild the carb? or could it be the vacuum lines? i did notice a weird air whistling type noise when i was adjust the idle stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated i have tried to find it on other posts but couldnt find it. Also does anyone know the factory settings for the idle mixture and idle speed screws id like to start with it being correct cause im not sure where they r after i adjusted them lol.

Thanks for the help Rob

air whistling is a vacuum leak, guaranteed. You'll need to fix that.

In general, carb rebuild is a good place to start. Which kit to use depends on what kind of carb you've got. I've got an electronic feedback carb, which wasn't around in '83, so I don't have any good suggestions on kits to use. I do know that rockauto.com seems to have a couple kits, though I don't have any idea how complete they are.

Also, it's possible that someone put in the wrong air bleeds or jets at some point in the past, which could also cause it to run really rich. I don't know anything about the jets or air bleeds beyond that they're there :o) That said, I'd start with a rebuild and go from there.
