Hi guys. I'm new to the board and hope I can get some advice. I own a 95 240sx. Sadly she doesn't run right now. I was told that the timing chain has broke. Has anyone had this problem? I had replaced the engine back in July with a used engine due to the same problem. Then in December it went out again. Both engines had roughly 100 thousand miles. My question is, can you fix the chain, or would it be more beneficial to put in another engine. (this time a new one)? I really enjoyed driving my car, and would like to get it up and running again. Any advice?:help

First Welcome to the Fam...

second...How did you blow the chain on both engines? get the engine serviced.. change the timing chain adn see if that caused serious problems. and if that is the case then get a new engine...

Here is what I think.

1. If you want to keep the motor in it that you have now, buy a used head off another car (reason being you may of messed up your valves if the chain broke) and fix the chain........

2. If you want another motor, find one (you can find them cheap on http://www.car-parts.com) and get the water pump and timing chain, guides, rails, gears, and tensioner replaced BEFORE you put it in, that way its a lot easier.

Hope this helps......................

Well the first engine went out because of poor maintenance on my part. The second engine I have no idea. I learned my lesson after the first incident, and kept good care of the second. I was told by a mechanic that this is not unusual when the car reaches the 100 thous. mark. thanks for the advice!

Hey Matt-it does not run at all. The night it went out, I was on the interstate and everything went out. The radio, all the lights everything. Fortunatly I was able to get to the side of the road. I had to have it towed 30 miles to get it to my house.

That's bizarre.

Even if the chain breaks and the motor shuts off, as long as your battery is charged, the accessories should still function. Radio and lights should not have turned off.

I think the problem may lie elsewhere. Are you 100% sure it was the chain? They typically develop a noise at 100k but breakage is pretty rare at that mileage, especially for 2 separate engines.

Tell your mechanic to blow that 100k mile **** up someone elses ***!!! No seriously do it.... do it now. Ive beat the living hell out of my KA and automatic transmission since I got her in 99 with 28k miles on her. I now have 116k a 1" thick stack of time slips, 10 or 11 autocrosses, and I drive her hard on the street as well. I cant get a set of tires to last more then 20k miles and thats with proper rotation, maintenance, and 0 burnouts...

Oh yeah she runs and shifts (remember the auto part) perfectly, btw. But then again I take 100% care of the car mechanically.

Anyway everything went out eh??? If you are sure its not the battery / alternator (a simple jump start that results in nothing working still while connected to another car / box / machine, would rule these out), I would then check for main fuses being blown...

One thing Ill suggest looking at as it sounds immediately sudden without warning, is the 30amp ignition fusable link. Check to see if that is blown. If it is (fuseables dont always blow visible...), locate the valve cover breather tube. Look at the harness running under it (comming from the injectors), and check underneath it. Theres a design flaw on the 95-96 where that harness will rest on a bolt on the head and eventually eat through it, nailing r/bk or the primary ignition wire shorting it and killing the car instantly (to leave you stranded wondering wtf is up with the ignition and a slew of other ****.... ive been there and spent the rest of the next day finding this lil short as the last thing I checked hehe)....

Check this out as it sounds about right to me.... If not, well fix it anyway as it may happen eventually. To fix, youll need to wrap the wire with electrical tape (where it was worn, skip this if for precautionary measures of course) then take a 5/8" heater hose 3" or so long and slice it in the middle. Wrap this around the fixed harness section and wrap with tape again. I used silicone tubing I had on hand then later found out this is a listed problem and thats exactly how the techs fix it...

im gonna let the admins take care of this, they know WAY more than me, but yea, the KA is a good engine, if taken care of, will easily go 200k, or so ive heard, mine has 120k, and im doing my chain soon, but otherwise it runs great, no leaks, nothing, (doing the seafoam soon too) but good luck on the engine and welcome to the baords, this place rocks

yeah, definately don't go get a new engine if you don't know what caused the problem this time. From what I understand, it usually isn't the timing chain itself that goes bad, but the guides it runs on can wear down. Do some more troubleshooting and narrow down the problem. People here can help you better if you know more about what exaclty the problem is and are clear in describing it. good luck.

Take off the valve cover and look at the chain your self you'll see if it snap (not likley though) You'd have to inject like a 150 shot of NOS to snap the chain that quickly with no warning. Everything electrical cutting off on you is deffinatly not the timing chain. Check fuses, battery, grounds, starter wires, alternator, things electrical. Then come back and tell us what you find.

Thanks for all the advice, this is a great start. I'm not sure when I can get it worked on, it depends on when I can get some extra cash-Michelle:)
