Hello all. I'm looking for some feedback here.
I have been using 255/40/19 tires on my 07 and my 09 M35 RWD. I'm 150% sold on using the 255s instead of the OEM 245s for the improved grip and handling (real or imagined).
My current set (Ventus S1noble2) are past half their tread after about 35,000 mile and they were great for handling, wet / dry traction, etc.
However, now they are producing more and more road noise as the tread wears - nearly to the level of snow tires. Therefore I am going back to Michelin. Just a bit of info: I am in South Florida so most of my driving is on flat, smooth roads and the only weather issue is rain.
Here is where you lot come in:
I still want 255/40/19 on the front, but I am considering an increase to 265/40/19 on the rears. I verified they will fit within the wheel well but I have never used a different size tire front to rear before and here are my concerns:
1) what (if anything) will this change regarding the ride quality?
2) I love the grip, ride quality, and handling of the 255s but I reckon that 265s and 255s have a different 'roll' against the road, will this have an effect on stability and handling of my car?

I would appreciate your input!

My opinion is that the wider tire will not have any perceptible degradation in handling. They will be "meatier", so of anything the ride will be softer.

Wider tires will have a larger contact patch, so the grip will increase - good for straight lines and gradual curves, but more scrubbing in tight turns. [Picture turning a bicycle wheel vs an oil barrel]. Again, 10mm shouldn't be that big of an issue.

The 265 series will also roll slower [vehicle speed unaffected] due to the larger circumference, but it's less than 2% of a discrepancy. I am sure that is within the car's allowance due to normal wear of tires before the ABS, VDC & TCS systems go nuts.

I think our Ms look really good with wide rears. Even if you don't win any autoctoss championships, you'll like the look. A forum member, Bodyguard comes to mind. How wide are your wheels?

275/35/19 rear, with those 255/40/19's might be a good option One good place to find out about different sized tires and compare is http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-Size-Calculator

40 side wall would put the tire into the fender or liner most likely. Also it would bring the overall rolling diameter quite a bit taller then stock over an inch while the 275/35/19 will actually be .1 inch smaller then stock, well within acceptable margins.
