New Tires on 2008 EX35

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Got my Yokohma's....AVID ENVigor (Ultra High Performance All-Season)...I went one size wider...235 and have 18" wheels. Loved the tread pattern too!

WOW...holy crap...it's a whole different car! I heard my exhaust for the first time...those Dunlap POS had 35,000 on them and I sounded like a Big Foot the giant mudder coming down the road...they were so freakin LOUD.

Check them out...did lot's of research...45,000 mile tires...and great ratings when you compare ALL factors.

They are awesome in the rain...and can't wait to see how they do in our lovely winters...well, I guess I can wait now that I think about it :chuckle:

glad you like the AVIDs, after finding out the Dunlops are on a 90 day backorder from Discount Tire I broke down and ordered these too. They are the only other tire for our car with a V rating, everything else is H or T rubbish.

An "H" rating is not "rubbish" unless you are planning on driving over 130 mph, and you know that is not going to happen.

Well, since I've had my EX35 less than a week, after reading reviews on the tirerack, it appears that the
225x55rx18 GoodYear Assurance comforTread (grand touring) tires are the top rated all season tires on their entire site, so I just ordered a set to replace the Pirelli P6 plus tires that are rated almost half as good as the Goodyear
tires. My wife has been using Goodyear tires on her camry for14 years 270,000 miles and is on her third of
fourth set. I can't believe the mileage she is getting. My Pirelli P6 plus all season will be for sale in the san
francisco bay area soon, for a steal of a price in case anyone is interested. Rear tires are close to 100% and front tires are at 80% or so the dealership said

I have to laugh :chuckle: at the Tirerack Reviews that are coming in about the ol DunCraps.

The first one thats posted, is mine... and the rest of them are all from other owners of EX35's.

Enjoy...

*************************************

I'm a Moderator of an Infiniti EX35 Forum... and if you buy an EX35 with 18 inch Wheels, the Factory-installed OEM Tire is the Dunlop Sport 7000 A/S. These Tires are junk. People on our Forum are getting very poor Tread-wear with them. We have multiple Threads discussing the Dunlops... and most of us can't wait to swap them out. Avoid these Tires!

*************************************

I feel I owe it to everyone contemplating purchasing this tire, to relate my experience with the Dunlop Sport 7000 A/S. These were quite possibly the worst tires I have ever had on a vehicle, bordering on dangerous to drive. When new, (OEM fitted.) they were twitchy to driver input on-center, and (moderately)followed ashphalt cupping on older roads. Upon reaching 5000 miles, they had deteriorated to the point where they did not want to go down the road straight. These tires agressively follow high spots on pavement. In icy conditions, this action would occasionally pitch my EX35 AWD into skids while driving straight down the highway! Alignment was checked (Ok.) Tire pressures were correctly maintained (Onboard pressure indication.), and the tires rotated at 4000 miles in an attempt to correct the problem. My wife was ready to trade in her practically new EX35, when I finally replaced the Dunlops with another brand of tires, and the problem was totally cured. I had the tire shop examine the Dunlops and they "could not find anything wrong with them". Not good in snow, not good on ice, not good in the rain, noisy, and downright dangerous on cupped road surfaces. I recommend them soley for collecting rain water, and letting mosquitoes breed in them.

*************************************

These tires were mounted on my car when it was purchased new. They have worn very poorly, and will have to be replaced before winter at possibly 22,000 miles. They became noisy very early in their use emitting a noisy whomp whomp sound similar to a tire separation. My dealer found no balance or separation problem but suggested a 4 wheel alignment at approximately 12,000 miles which was done. The problem continued plus tramelling where the car tends to aggresively follow undurations in the road. In the next few months I intend to discard them and install new Michelin Hydroedge with Green X also an all season tire suitable for our cold and icy Canadian winters. Why a major quality manufacturer like Infiniti would place such a poor quality tire on their new vehicle amazes me. Could it possibly be an ill conceived economic factor??

*************************************

I purchased my Infiniti with these tires installed. It had 400 miles at that time. I now have over 23000 miles on these tires. At about 5k miles I started hearing road noise and steering shake at braking. The noise got progressively worst expecially at highway speeds. At about 15k I began to really notice wear on the insides of the tire. Infinti services could not find anything wrong with vehicle. Never had a tire breakdown like this.

*************************************

I live in Orlando, FL. It's a great tire on dry surface, cornering, braking, noise level, shock absorbing all pretty good. But in wet conditions you must be very careful with the throttle especially if you are driving a 300HP rear wheel drive vehicle. Rear wheels slip very easily and throw rear of the car to the side. Braking in the other hand still good under wet conditions.

Follow-up Review, 7,500 Miles on Tires
October 27, 2009
After replacing 3 of my original 4 set due to tire defect causing extreme imbalance (cannot be fixed with weight) I have to change my rating to negative. Even though Dunlop paid like 2/3 of the replacement cost, it is unacceptable. I'm done with Dunlop; I wouldn't buy it again and I wouldn't suggest is to anyone.

*************************************

These tires were OE on my car and they do nothing very well. Not great as summer dry pavement tires, worse in the wet. As winter tires they are even worse. While the tread wear is about average tires are currently cupped and need replacement with regular rotation and balancing at dealer. Have never been a fan of Dunlope tires and remain so after my expreience with these. Will be getting a set of Michelins to replace them with.

*************************************

After about 22,000 miles, these tires are so loud I am having to replace them. They have worn very uneven and I would not recommend these tires to anyone.

*************************************

Terrible! Dunlop USED to make such good tires but they failed miserably with these! Cupped and noisy, ready to be replaced at 23,000 miles on an Infiniti EX35. Tires rotated every oil change, but didn't seem to help any.

Drove 1700++ kms (Toronto-Montreal-Quebec) this weekend on these GY Comforthread and can't be any happier! Gone is the loud road noise from the tires. Also noticeable difference in ride comfort, not as harsh of a ride. Stock Dunlops lasted about 54000 kms used in winter.

I wanted to get some Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires for my EX, but every place I call says they're not available or are on backorder. Anyone know what's up with that? I did see that tirerack.com says estimated availability is 10/26/2011, so maybe they'll be available again soon.

And my local Infiniti dealer said they weren't able to get Michelins at all, and they also can't get Goodyear ComforTred (though they could get other Goodyears); I guess most people here don't buy tires from the Infiniti dealer? (But the "buy 3 tires, get the 4th for $1" promo that ends this month got my attention.) I think I'm going to go with the Yokohama Avid Envigor.

I originally intended to buy MXV4s and also found them not available and was looking hard at the Envigor. Not being able to X rotate the Envigors made me look a little harder and I found the 245-50-18 MXM4s. I have 5K on them now and have no regrets. The MXM4s do everything better than the stock tires and I can X rotate them.

I have to say getting replacement tires for this car is turning out to be a real pain in the rear.

Michelin MXV4 H rated are hard to find, need to be special ordered and cost a considerable amount more, plus Mavis says they get a lot of feedback that they are great but do not last long. Dealer I am sure will even charge me more.

Yokohamas Mavis Guy says these also are on the soft side and though better than the Dunlops OEM Sport 7000 they by no means live up to the manufactures 60,000 mile claim.

Now get this Mavis Guy and his Manager swear up n down that a Dunlop (yes it is the dreaded "D" word) Signature Standard All Touring H rated tire will last the longest and be the best in the snow.

Also to note Mavis had NO problem agreeing to put the "H" on the car. Dealer did not want to do it at first, but when I told him I owned not leased, then he finally agreed.

Now I can drive fast on the expressway but will only do that in nice dry weather. If it is raining or snow/ice. I do turn into a "little Ole Lady'" So safety is my most important priority. I say that cause 95% of you will say go with the best performer.

So do I listen to Mr Mavis and go for a Standard Touring Dunlop. Or disregard his recommendation and either go for the Yokohamas "V" or keep calling around until I find those elusive Michelins "H". Now think what you would want your wife to do, not necessarily what you all would do.

I have original Michelins with 40k usage and will have to replace pretty soon since they are showing 6/32 treadwear. I have 17s (225-60s) and I want to go fatter. Anyone tried 235s or 245s on this car??

@Mikey1951:

Out of curiosity, why do you want to go "fatter" on your next set of tires? Looks, I assume?

Not sure what part of the country you live in, but if you see any amount of snow/slush, you may wanna' keep as close to a 225 width tire as possible. These cars don't weight all that much, and a wider contact patch with the road surface generally means increased hydroplaning and decreased winter traction. Plus, wider tires also tend to make poor road surfaces more apparent to the driver, like tram-lining (i.e., driving in ruts on the highway left by heavy vehicles like tractor trailers, making it feel like you're caught in a channel).

I'm sure going with a 235 wouldn't be a huge difference, and moving to a 235/55-17 tire would open up all kinds of options with minimal upset to your speedometer, but just thought I'd mention it.

Fyi, if you' happen to be looking for a good, solid all-weather tire in our stock size (225/60-17), go over to http://www.tiresavings.com and check out the Nokian WR-G2 SUV tire. They run about $145/each and are supposed to be unparalleled in the winter stuff, but still very sporty in dry conditions. Mine are already on order :) I just bought my 2008 EX in July; I really like the stock Michelins which came on our cars (Latitude Tour HP) and currently have 53k miles on mine, but I hear they're not terrific in the snow--plus the damn things cost a small fortune @ $225/each.

Hope that helps a little. Keep us posted on your decision.

Regards,
Tim

Not to confuse matters for you, but I'm hoping maybe this will help. One thing to keep in mind is the real reason why some people are so adamant about sticking with the same speed rating tire which came on the car. Sometimes (not always) a higher speed rated tire also has more "sporty" characteristics, like better lateral handling, etc. Typically, the sportier the tire, the faster it may tend to wear because of the rubber compounds being used.

Anyway, especially given how you've explained your driving style, I would not hesitate to go with an "H" rated tire over a "V" rated one....and it need not be the impossible-to-find Michelin. Keep in mind, if they're really that tough to find, think about how annoyed you'll be if you ever ruin one and have to find a replacement real fast. Just sayin' I hear lots of positive press from people about the Goodyear ComforTread--both on dry conditions as well as winter ones.

My father in law is the only person I know who's run the Dunlop Signature tires you mentioned (and I do realize an Acura is a totally different car), and he said he wasn't a big fan of them--specifically not great in the snow, and I believe the vast majority of owner reviews on Tirerack.com agree.

Hope that helps,
Tim

I live in NW Florida - so no snow - I'm looking for a mild, meaner look because when the rotors/pads go bad I will be going to drilled & slotted rotors and painted calipers. I think 235s should be ok but I worry 245s might have rubbing issues. I have a z3 roadster and by habit, I may lay on the EX from time to time. I too bought the EX just last month.

Cool...another bimmerhead :) I've owned every model 5-Series made...up until the E39 but I'm now an E38 7-Series guy :)

Ok, well if you like an aggressive tire, I would check out the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (as a BMW guy, you may already be familiar with this tire, so pls disregard). Great aggressive looks and has a nice rim protector, too. Even though its an ultra-high performance all-season, it's still a comfortable, great handling tire with insane dry and wet grip. Also has a 45K mileage warranty to boot. Comes in a 235/55-17. Fyi, I've run these on my 2005 Subaru Outback XT year round and am currently running them on my E38 during Fall (she doesn't get to see snow).

The only thing is, it is a directional tire and some folks here who've owned their EX's longer than I have say to avoid directional tires because you can't cross-rotate them, so you likely won't see 50k or more on them. Just wanted to mention that.

Hope that helps!

Also went with the MXM4. I had decided on the MXV4 in stock size (225-55-18), but could only find them in a few places. Price for MXV4 was about $1,020 out the door...we found the MXM4 at Costo for $1,100 out the door. I did plus size however...245-50-18. There is no rubbing on our 2008 with AWD...they are V rated and can be rotated.

Nice to see another BMW roadster owner on here. I have a 01 M with all the DINAN upgrades (Stage 3 on both engine and suspension) and a 3.73 rear-end. The car is a rocket. For tires I actually have the Michelin SuperSports...forget winter driving.

Cool! And yet another bimmerhead :) They're coming out of the woodwork - lol

Yeah, I've not had my '01 E38 in the white stuff either--despite the fact I hear their weight distribution makes them decent cars in the snow--with appropriate winter tires, of course. Problem is, I see fellow E38 club members who have the same year car as mine but do drive theirs in the snow. and...well...let's just say there's a BIG difference in how much wear and tear occurs to a car during winter. I'd rather leave mine in the garage personally.

OK now were talkin'!!! I have Toyos on my roadster (staggered 225 F & 245 R w spacers all around) and drive 5-6K per year. So, I understand I can go to 245s without any issues on the wife's EX. After the warranty expires (sorry, off topic) I want to add CAIs and a chip to scare my wife. Anybody done this yet??

After a few weeks on the MXM4s, I can report that we are very happy. The car feels like it should have from Infiniti.

Far as the M goes, the weather has been decent to not warrant any sand or salt on the roads so far this season...so I have had the car out a good bit. The super sport tires are not that great in the cold...like riding on rocks. But the engine loves the cold air.

Sounds like we have a few lurking bimmerheads on here. Perhaps we can all meet up at a wrenching party...I was just at the last one here in VA. There was a thread or two on bimmer forums.

I'll bet those summer treads are like hockey pucks right about now. My Hankook summers are about the same, but hopefully I'll have time today to put my ol' M-Parallels shod with Pilot Sport A/S' back on today. As long as there's no salt or snow on the ground, I'll drive mine year 'round, as well. Otherwise, the ol' girl sits in the garage on the trickle charger.

We also have a very active BMW community here in the Philly/NJ area, as well. Being that the E38 doesn't have as huge a following as your model, we have many members driving up a few times a year from as far north as Boston/NH and as far south as ATL...plus everywhere in between.

Getting back on topic, I just had my new tires installed (the Nokian WR-G2 SUV) last week with a "fresh" alignment and absolutely love them. Granted I'm running 17" rims whereas most of the folks here seem to be sporting 18's, but so far they're really great and the price tag of ($146/each) was certainly competitive given the few options which exist for Performance All-Season tires in stock sizes. Given that they're a Finnish tire company, I had been more concerned about how they'd handle on dry/wet roads rather than on snow/ice, but will definitely report back.

Cheers and Happy New Year to all.....

Tim
