Hello again. Long time, no type. To bring you all up to date, I have a 1980 720. It still has the craptastic Hitachi carb and was one of the last L20 motors.

I just replaced the timing chain, after being left on the side of the road and all signs pointing to that being the issue. When I parked it, I could get it to start and stay running if, and ONLY if, I kept the accelerator to the floor. Now that the new chain is in, I cannot get it to start. All it will do is sputter a tiny bit and maybe backfire once in a while. I figured I must have been off a link or more, due to my own idiocy so I re-did the job. Now, I can hand crank the motor and all my TDC marks match every time (top and bottom). My distributor points at cylinder 1 as well. Dizzy cap is new, plugs are new, wires are new, vac hoses are only 3 years old (replaced upon purchase). I have good spark at the plugs, and can see gas going in the carb when I pump the accelerator. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why the thing will not run. Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

The timing in these L engines are tricky. I'm sure the timing is out. Try removing the oil pump to reset the timing. it took me two days of shifting the timing. when the marks on the pump are lined up and the marks on the chain are in the correct position it wont start at all. Now it runs fine after reseting the valve timing and the distributor timing. nothing if factory set. hope you have some success. :bigthumb:
