Hello, I have an 89 240sx and just recently had the timing chain replaced. After the chain was replaced the car was running like crap i.e. bogging down, lack of power, and just plain didn’t sound right (and as of now doesn’t run at all). I put a timing light on it and found the timing to be way off. Of course the next logical course of action was to adjust the timing. I found that this could not be done as the distributor was at the maximum forward adjustment. At this time I realized the spark plugs were in the wrong order. 4 – 3 then 2 – 1. What the hells going on here, and better yet how the hell do I fix it?? Thanks in advance for any help, comments, and suggestions.

First, put the engine at TDC, this will be the first alignment mark on the crank pulley. Pull the first spark plug and stick your thumb over the hole to confirm that it's the compression stroke. Then, the distributor rotor should be pointing at one of the plug wire towers. Put plug wire #1 on that one, then 3, 4, and 2 in a clockwise (I think clockwise?) order. Check the rotor direction to make sure of direction, but put them in 1,3,4,2.

EDIT: Sorry, TDC is the second mark from the left on the crank pulley, not the leftmost mark.

If the rotor isn't pointing to #1 in the cap then you are going to have to remove the dist.and the oil pump to set ignition timing. Make sure you are on tdc.On the oil pump housing where the shaft goes in is a groove cut in the housing and a small dot punched in the groove. Above the gear on the oil pump shaft is a like dot, match the two up and reinstall the pump with out turning the gear to much. Put one bolt in the pump to hold it in place and then go up top and check to make sure the have moon shape on the top of the shaft is pointing to 11 and the bottom is at 25 after. Reinstall dist. and check to see if the rotor is pointing to #1 in the cap. If not you have to remove the pump and turn the gear one tooth and reinstall till it is correct.
