Ok so i had been running the car w/o a thermostat and its fine. Today I installed a new thermostat and its overheating. It acts as though the thermostat is not opening. The bottom hose stays cold while the top hoes is hot. I'm getting ready to take the thermostat out to check the it operates correctly but what other reason could cause the coolant to not flow correctly besides bad thermostat or pump?

I had the exact same problem a couple of weeks ago with the exception of me running a thermostat to begin with.

I have no idea how, but I had developed an air pocket in the system. After bleeding the cooling system for the better part of an hour with the nose of the car elevated and no less than 3 different thermostats, all is well now.

This happened from one day to the next mind you. Drove the car to and from work on a Friday, did not use the car again until Saturday night and after about 30 minutes noticed my water temp creep from the usual 190* to just over 220*. Same symptoms you are describing: No coolant flow out the lower hose.

I have it bleed to where its resonable and it should allow the t-stat to open. I have checked to see if its working correctly. Its still overheating and dosen't seem like coolant is flowing correctly. Btw im gettin a nissan t-stat cause this one starts opening at 180 and is fully open at 190. Kinda rediculus. I let the engine get to about 205 and the bottom hose was still cold.

ok I installed a new nissan t-stat and it seems to be working because the top hose is no longer super hot and the bottom hose gets warm also.

I'm still having overheating issues though. I believe i had bleed it reasonably well and i'm thinking it may be the water pump. What kind of symptoms would a bad waterpump show?

ok i really nees some expert advice here. New nissan t-stat installed correctly and tested to work correctly. New Waterpump installed and working correctly. Checked all hoses and make sure they are on correct and nothing is leaking. The car is still overheating and it seems like its not passing through the radiator like the t-stat is shut. Radiator feels cold to the touch. TO bleed the system i used the system where you use a coke bottle or whatever and run the engine letting air escape while the car in jacked up in the front. System should be bleed correctly so im not sure whats going on. Also nothing is wrong with headgasket this is a brand new rebuilt engine.

You should pressure test the radiator system and go from there.
