So today I tackled a project I've been putting off for far too long - New struts on the G35.
I can't tell you how many cars I've seen running on worn-out struts, but most people seem to think if they're not leaking, they're still good.
Most struts have a useful life of 30-50K miles, and OEM struts with lowering springs can go south in half that time.
Mine had been well-abused, and were way past due.
Bought a set of Tokico D-Spec adjustable struts, and the install was pretty easy. The G35 has lots of wheelwell room and it's a simple suspension setup:
Front: 3 nuts at the top of the strut tower, a bolt at the bottom, a bolt holding the swaybar endlink, and you're out. You'll need a buddy to push down on the caliper so you can extract the assembly.
Rear: 2 nuts at the top of the strut and one at the bottom.
Adjustability on the front is simple, there's a neat keyring adjuster included for adjusting them under the hood.
The rears require a special extension, which you can buy seperately (need them for the G but not the Z). You have to enlarge a hole (easy) to run the extension into the cabin, and I mounted mine inside the LATCH housings on the rear dack (pretty trick).
They arrived set at the stiffest setting, and I backed them off 1/2 turn - Took it for a drive, and the difference is amazing. Nice upgrade for the money!
